Tunze or Eco??

I have a 150gDD 48"x36"x21". Glass is 3/4" starphire on 3 sides. I currently run the Tunze 6205 with the 7095 controller. No complaints on performance as I have had no issues other than the size of the pumps.

Any reason I should switch to the Vortech MP40 other than the smaller size?

I also run LED's and would consider running the Radion's to have everything sync together, but not sure the difference in money is worth the switching since I currently do not have any issues with my current equipment?

Thoughts? Opinions?

Thanks

If you were concerned about the size, the 6095's could give you a comparable footprint, less noise and a lower price as well as the ability to aim them with a comparable flow pattern. You would need to upgrade the outside magnet to get hold on 3/4", 6025.501 is the magnetic extension you would require.

On my tank, I have 3 vortech 40w and 1 6105. I like the 6105 as its flow goes further across my 6 1/2 foot tank. The vortech doesn't goes as far out but has a wider flow so I place those on the back of my tank. Vortech wins in size. But tunze wins in being silent. The only noise I get out of my tank is the vortech dry side humming. Its noticeable when the house is silent at night when everyone is asleep.

Like Roger pointed out already which is what I did and bought 2 6095 with extension for my 3/4" glass. I like to keep my pump as hidden as possible.

Little update:

Been running the MP40 Gen 2 for 2 days now along with the Tunze 6205.

Here are my observations:

1. Tunze is dead silent compared to the MP40. I have tried every twist and turn to get the MP quiet and the current setting is the best. I am running it in reef crest mode at 100%. It is noisey compared to the Tunze.

2. The Vortech has a broader flow pattern, but doesn't reach the other side of the tank as well as the Tunze.

3. The footprint is definitely smaller with the MP on both the inside and outside of tank.

4. My Nassarius snails get stuck on the Vortech, but can move freely on the Tunze. These are the only snails I have seen on the pumps.

Overall, they are both good pumps. The size is an issue for my wife and I, but the noise is also an issue. We are going to give the Vortech some more time before making a final decision on what route to take.

Thanks

Sounds like pretty fair observations from my experience as well. I'm experiencing the same things only in the opposite manner of course. :)

The snail thing is a bit strange, never an issue I had. Rarely had snails on the pump at all.

Anyway, my main reason for responding is- make sure to check the wetside and that it is securely assembled. I took it apart for cleaning and think I got it all snugged up again but wouldn't hurt to check it out.

The snail thing was odd for me too, but it's what I observed so I posted about it. Crazy snails aren't so smart I guess. ;)

I did check to make sure all things were nice and tight remembering what; I think his name was Criag from way back when; advised when I had noise issues back then.

Glad you are enjoying the Tunze. Keep me posted on your experience.

Thanks

Back in the day when the Vortech was first available..I think it was the MP20? Anyway, I had the same noise issue and figured by now they would have resolved it?

Guess not.

I think it is pretty much inevitable since the motor is external to the tank. I have tried MP40s 3 times since they came out, and all were too noisy....with one of the newer ones seeming worse than i remember the original being. They will not quiet down much more than they will after one week.

Tunze are dead silent to me, even with everything off in the tank. The only time i hear mine are after a full cleaning for a couple days.

The same issues I had in the past with noise seems to be common with most everyone's opinion/experience as well. It's unfortunate.

The wife is not sold on the Vortech due to the noise. She likes the fact that the foot print is small, but the noise is overwhelming the visual aspect for her.

Def tunze!. I used fo run 2 mp40s ..got one 6105 and it had WAY more flow than both mp40s

I can see that with my current 6205 running literally side by side with the MP40. As mentioned, the 40 has a broader flow, but the Tunze flows more and reaches out further and is dead silent.

It really comes down to the size for me. I can handle the foot print of the MP, but the Tunze is just "big". Maybe switching out the pump model would help, but the Tunze is still larger in comparison to the MP no matter which model I go with.

It is interesting that some consider the size difference significant enough to matter. I have never once looked at the many tank-of-the-months that use Tunze streams and waveboxes and thought "wow those pumps are big".

The noise thing is an absolute show stopper for me, but the footprint doesn't matter to me at all. The streams simply blend in. In fact, I prefer the 6105 foot print inside the tank attached in the upper rear corners to the typical MP40 location right in the middle of a side viewing pane. I find the MP40 more obtrusive.

I guess everyone has a different preference for aesthetics.

Rishma, you are absolutely correct in your observation. I never looked at it like that. Simply looked at the size vs. the location. The 6205 I have is located in the back left and the MP is to the right of that "in the middle" of that same pane of glass.

Looking at it in your eyes if you will.....the MP is more obtrusive, not to mention the cord that either hangs down or sits above the pump. With the Tunze, I can run the cord over the back of the tank and you don't see it.

Very good point and I appreciate you pointing out what now is very obvious.

Thank you.

I'm with this guy - I'd rather see it than hear it. None of the Tunze models that are applicable for my aquarium are so large that the size difference (compared to my Vortechs) is of concern. However, all of them are dramatically quieter than my current pumps, and have a lower MSRP per pump, so changing over is a no brainer for me.

I always preferred the "smaller footprint" of Vortech until I actually owned them. My aquarium was in the living room, so I really hated the volume of the pumps when we had guests over or we're watching a movie. The most suitable Tunze pumps for my tank seem to be the 6095, which is quite compact. The fact that I can mount them anywhere & aim to direct the flow (as opposed to mount it in the wide open center of a pane of glass) means I get more open viewing panels.

I understand where you are coming from. The noise is annoying. As mentioned earlier, the noise from the original MP20's was significant enough to hear it across the house so I dumped them in a matter of weeks after many many failed attempts to fix the issue with the help from Vortech.

I then went to Tunze and was able to enjoy the tank sound free. It was pleasant and my wife enjoyed it much more.

I assumed; shame on me, that the noise issue would have been addressed by now, but I stand corrected. It's really too bad, but it is what it is.
