Tunze or Vortech?

I have a 90 lps & SPS and making it sps dom.

I was going to order tunze 6101 tomorrow but was looking at vortechs on youtube.

Would one vortech be enough for a 90 gallon to reach the whole tank?

Can the flow from one vortech reach the whole tank without the need of other power heads?

Can the tunze 6101 flow spread match a vortechs?

The only good thing about the Vortech is the wider flow it provides than the tunze. If you can stand the loud noise then go for the vortech, but I wouldn't say that neither a 6101 or a single vortech would be enough in a 90g. The tunze is near silent and does not have parts that need to be replaced yearly like the vortech. Getting two of either pump would provide an optimum amount of flow.
 
that is my main question since I have not seen either the 6101 or mp40 running in person.

How much wider is the flow from a vortech than a tunze? I don't know what each can do...

If i understand right the vortech is not adjustable because the flow is so broad it reaches the whole tank- is this really true?
 
I just upgraded to a 90 and had a single vortech. The flow from a single vortech could technically be enough for the entire tank but that means running it almost at max. The problem I had was that anything on the near side would get totally blasted. I guess it depends on what your keeping and how its arranged. Also running it at max does make a bit of noise. I just added a second vortech and am very happy. Both run at much lower speed and a lot quiter while giving much better flow throught the tank. Still experimenting with the different modes. I like the flexibility here, you can run in either master/slave in synch/anti synch in 4 different modes.... or run each independently and experiment, for instance run one side in reef crest while the other side is pulsing a wave.
 
The big bonus of the vortech is less viewing space taken up by pumps in the tank. The "wet side" of the vortech is relatively small and almost completely out of sight and mind. None of the vortech heat is transferred to your water, since the pump is external. You can get an icecap/ecotech battery unit that will run the vortech for up to 30 hours.

I've never owned a Tunze, but from what my friends tell me they are quieter, more adjustable, and the quality is top of the line.

IMO You can't lose with either purchase.
 
Don't know if it helps, but I have 2 MP40Ws and 1 battery backup on the way for my 90G build. I was able to find a guy on ebay that gave me all three for $910 shipped. Still a lot of money, but if they are good enough for Melev, they are good enough for me ;)
 
on the wet side of a vortech I hear the magnet rusts.

Does that get replaced when you install a new wetside for maintenance?

Yes, the rusted part is on the wet side. Supposedly it takes about a year to get that bad, and it costs about $15.00 for a new one.
 
I have both the vortech and 6101, and I can't say that one is better than the other. I like them both...... I want them all!!!! hahaha. seriously though, the tunzes seem more directed less spread, while the vortech seems to move a lot more water all around. the vortech is pretty quiet, almost as quiet as a tunze, if it's in the lower speeds, but it's pretty loud when the speed goes up. the tunze is all around great, but is pretty ugly looking/ big!! the vortech almost hides/ camouflages into a black background. I think either one is great, both great choices. I know this thread is only about tunzes and vortechs, but I just have to say, I did a little comparison of my own, and the koralias' flow feels just like the vortechs, and the seios' flow is just like the tunzes. weird huh?

Just a FYI that there are at LEAST 30 topics that are exactly the same as this one. A little digging and you'll find far more info that you'll ever want.
 
I was having the same debate for my 75gallon, I am going with Vortech due to the fact that I wont have to buy a controller or magnet. It comes with everything. I hear about the Tunzes breaking just as much also.
