Tunze or Vortech?

Jim,

You are correct, the wet sides are the same on the MP20/MP40, just the drivers are different. Max for 20 is 2,000gph, and the 40 is 3,000gph.

2 were Gen1's, the 3rd was a Gen2. The noise didn't seem as pronounced on the Gen2- but still too loud for my liking.

Someone correct me if I am wrong, but isn't the MP20 the same pump as the MP40 with a slower driver?
Yes. Same pump, different driver and power brick. You can easily convert a MP20 to a MP40W or the other way.

I am eventually going to upgrade my driver to the MP40 and will see the difference everyone talks about.

Thing is I don't run a quiet setup, my NEP fixtures fans/Octopus 800S overpower the sound of the MP20 on Reefcrest. I stil don't think I will hear the pump after the upgrade...

Time will tell.... :)

Scott- have you heard/tried the 6105's?
Unfortunately, no. I have not had the opportunity to try out the 6105. There have been noise issues with them reported on the Tunze forum. Supposedly, it goes away after a couple weeks when the pump breaks in. Tunze is making a change of a bigger prop and a lower voltage to run the pumps at a slower rpm to address this.

Damn, some good info here. Thanks a ton everyone. I am a bit concerned with the potential noise issue with Vortech. right now I am leaning towards sticking with Tunze. Thank you very, very much for all of the insight :)

My mp40 produced some noise at first, but after a couple of weeks of breaking in, its almost dead silent.

With no other noises from the tank, or other truly dead silent equipment, you will hear the Vortechs motor- it is a mechanical whirring/buzzing sound. Any other noise from fans, pumps, skimmers, average overflow- they will easily drown out the noise from the Vortech. If you have an in-wall, or the VT placed on the back, you will not hear it.

Its far from obnoxiously loud, but, when it is the only noise from my tank, it stood out.

The vortechs are the new kid on the block. I don't know if it really warrants replacing your tunze's. But I'm sure you'd be happy with whatever you decide to use.

What most people say is that the tunze you can move around ( Although the vortech has a pretty wide out put which "kind of" makes up for it )

The tunze is larger in the tank and a little more heat output , and even though besides a few extra tunze items that I am using I no longer use the power heads. With that said others have mentioned they kind of compliment each other with flow .

As far as noise is concerned ? I did not notice a difference between either pump my Tunze were not loud nor my vortech ( The buzz of my japanese spot light is louder ) .. I just wanted to try something different.

You cannot however , EVER EVER EVER beat Rogers customer support
the guy is awesome , only support I had ever gotten close to him was from reefermadness before they were bought by someone and went downhill within weeks. So because of that even though I doubt I will switch back full time to tunze powerheads I will always use other tunze products in my setup .

Its like pepsi or coke :D

i just put my first vortech in my tank last week...i couldn't be happier with it. I had a tunze in the past and personally wasn't a big fan of the "stream" pattern of flow. I just didn't work in my setup. The vortech is a much more broad flow, and the term "mixing" flow that was used earlier was a good description. I prefer the lack of equipment in the tank compared to the tunze...this out weighs any noise issue that could arise.

As far as the noise goes...it has a sound, but can't notice it on my system unless I lean and close to listen for it, my return and skimmer are waaaay more noisey.

Im sure you will be happy with either choice and good luck with your tank.

Well at least I am not the only one debating which to get. I have 2 koralia 4's on my 260 and urgently need something better. I guess it comes down to the type of flow I am looking for

I have 2 Vortechs currently and have run Tunzes in the past. I agree with jasert39, I like the flow pattern much better on the Vortechs.

I have however had numerous issue with my Vortech all which were taken care of under warranty. Also my Vortechs do Hum which is annoying since my tank is very silent.

All that being said, I do prefer the Vortech over the Tunzes for the flow pattern and the footprint in the tank.

I appreciate all of the input. After reading and researching a bit more I have decided to go with Vortech. I just ordered 3 40's. I'll keep my fingers crossed. Thanks again

Great information here! I too am thinking about the Vortech pump but I was reading something about wavemaking in a tank will shorten tank life by 20%. I know that may not pertain to just Vortech or Tunze system but to all wave making systems. Would someone comment on that?

Depends height of your wave etc.. Tank makers can build your tank ( and most high quality ones do now anyway ) make them a lot stronger if rimless because of it .

The tunze wave maker "box" has actually been known to shorten life due to the constantly pressure being forced on the seams over and over ( similar to wiggling it )

( its only if you are using them to create a wave .. random flow has no effect from what I have read .. )
