Tunze pump recommendation

Hi All:

I need a recommendation for 2 tunze pumps.

I have a small frag tank (7 gallons) that is 4feet higher than a 20 gallon sump that I have for my DT. I would like to use a Tunze pump to recirculate water to it. I don't know what the exchange rate should be for a frag tank, but I am hoping somone else might provide that data. Thinking that depending on flow rate the Tunze 1073.02 might work?

For my DT, I need a separate pump to reciculate water from my same sump. That tank is 30 gallons in capacity. The DT tank is 4.5 above the sump. Thinking 1073.05 for that?

Could I use one pump and valves? Then would I go with the 1073.05?

Thanks in advance!

Rick

At 4ft the 1073.020 will do about 250 gph. Which should be more than enough for a 7gallon tank.

The main issue with two tanks sharing a pump is the hoses get dirty, the pump gets dirty, the valves get clogged and you will find yourself constantly making adjustments to even out the flow. It can be done, but is usually more trouble than it is worth.

Hi Roger...Thanks...What about the 30 gallon tank? I think you are right separate pumps should be better. For the 7 gallon tank, what should I use for a line size to get that flow? Do you have some pump curves that you can post?

Thanks for everything!

For the ideal performance of a sump as a filter housing a skimmer, etc. the flow rate should be roughly 5 times tank volume per hour. This assumes in the main tank flow will be supplemented by powerheads as most corals need a higher velocity flow than this turnover rate will achieve. That is not practical on the 7 gallon obviously and the return pump should cover the bases. A second 1073.020 would work for your main tank, but I worry that the sump may have so much flow through the skimmer will not perform ideally and a filter bag handling that volume is likely to pulverize the trapped debris into suspension/solution. In either case the pumps do have a mechanical flow adjustment.
