Tunze Return/ Recirc pump REALLY loud!

hello,

this is my FIRST tunze product i just recently purchased:

Tunze Master Electric Recirculation Pump 1073.090

and having spent (3 pm to 11pm) this saturday removing my old ampmaster 3000 to this pump because of its reputed lower energy cost AND low noise operation!

i would like to say that the pump is much, much and much...noisier than my ampmaster ever was. my reef friend came over and even said 'is the pump supposed to be that noisy?' he didnt even know it was a tunze.

i am no audiologist...but i am going to guess that it it is well above 80 decibels (maybe because i am just annoyed) and the noise is unacceptable, esp coming from the reputation of tunze.

the second this is that the threading of the input and output is very ill suited to receive regular pvc union threaded fittings. in my case, they have a very slow leak...despite using firm pressure and sufficient teflon tape.

i await your answer to my very frustrating experience with my first tunze purchase!

thank you!

sorry, it should read friday night...

Where did you get the pump from? We had a problem with the first batch of 1073.09 and I was fairly certain we had gotten those all back and replaced the defective component- impeller housing. The source of the noise is likely a wrong impeller housing. As far as the union. I would suggest teflon paste instead of the tape, it is standard 1.5" NPT. There is an oring at the base that shoulld seat to whatever attachment you thread on to seal the attachment but I generally find the paste is superior to the tape. The pump will be a bit louder at first due to air trapped inside but I would say it should be quieter than the ampmaster.

hi roger!

thanks for the very quick reply! :)

i got the pump from a local reefer who received his about 3 or 4 weeks ago.

he wasnt using it and i had to take my ampmaster offline. in return, i ordered him a duplicate pump from marine depot (where he ordered his as well).

what can be done with 'mr freight train' as i have nicked it so far!?!

thanks!

edit: i think he ordered his when he first heard about them and the had to wait 3 to 4 weeks as they were on back order.

So, can you tell me if his is any quieter? I know that we sent out repair kits to old owners but may have overlooked someone. I just got the kits to replace the impeller housing about 4 weeks ago so this pump may not have it or when it was replaced the shaft may have broken. I can either send you the kit to do the repair or I can swap the pump with one I have repaired. Unfortunately our first batch had the impeller housings from the 50Hz motor and the impeller rubs on the housing and makes a racket but everyone who has received the correct cover has been pleased and noted a huge difference in the noise levels. Also, it is not easy to change this cover, the shaft is ceramic and while it is about as thick as a pencil and you cannot break it with your bare hands, with the leverage of the housing it can snap like a twig and you have to carefully pull straight back and avoid any angling of the housing to prevent this.

the pump i ordered for him is in transit as we speak.

i'll give him a call and see if i can put the one i ordered for him on my system and send the one to you that i am presently using.

i really dont want to put the ampmaster back on as my return has been completely replumbed to fit the tunze. that is another story! :D

The pump Ben is talking about is mine. I have not yet set up the new system and it was sitting on my shelf just waiting. I convinced Ben to buy one and they were back ordered so I told him to take mine while he waits for the one he ordered. Mine has never seen water and was odered from Marine Depot. Like Ben said, I waited 3-4 weeks becuase of the reported problem. This unit was dropped shipped from you to me, and I was told it had the new set-up and that was the reason for the delay as you had to change them yourself.

I will send you a PM with my info so you can double check. I did nothing to the pump other than put it on the shelf so is brand spankin new.

It's not impossible that me or Dave screwed up and broke the shaft or skipped one, we had 16 pumps to swap. Sometimes they snap when you reassemble them and you don't notice. I am certain either the cover is wrong or the shaft is broken but I know it wasn't anything you did.
