Tunze sand storm

Do the magnet mounts actually help to stop sand storms by being able to angle the pumps better? Right now I can only have 1 6060 on at a time and even then I get a bare spot in the middle of my 150. It is not a real "storm", just slowly moves the sand away.

If your direction point to coral , it will ripe off coral "skin" . Because the weight if pump that it slightly point down cause "sand storm". I thinking how to make it point level or slightly up.

Reefer, can you please describe the position of the pump in your tank. I have 6200 in my 4f tank without any sand storm. I can help if you post some pix of your tank

Mounted in rear corners
Sorry this is a bad pic but you can still see the tunze

You can try mounting the streams higher up. My placements are like yours but as high as I can go without the pumps sucking air from the water surface in my 90g and I do not have sand moving around. I use magnets.

Also, make sure the grill is facing down and the solid area of the pump cover is centered on the top. This will prevent a vortex at the water's surface if you were to place the pumps higher.

Great idea.

I placed some rock rubble in the area where some of my sand was pushed away. It helps.

There is a small vortex, but no air sucking where it is mounted currently. I'm not sure how much higher I can go without air sucking.
So is it suffice to say that the magnets are not worth the extra $70?

The magnets make a very big difference. I'll see if I can find a pic of how I had them, but the idea is, turn the tunze on the magnet mount, then angle the magnet mount and viola, the tunze points up towards the surface.

The magnets are definately worth it imo. really easy to work with when the pumps needs to be cleaned. I couldn't use the erector set that came with the pump because of my tank's eurobracing. The magnets will also make the pump a lot more level than what you are using now. My pumps on magnets look virtually level compared to yours.

If you're noticing a small vortex, then yes, you're probably at the highest point on where u can position the pump.

Hey Dave...if you have pics let me know. Otherwise I assume I can just buy the magnets and figure it out. It seems if they are angled up then the strategy would be to mount them lower in the tank...?

I am going to buy the magnets today...will the 6080.50's work with 1/2" thick glass, it says for up to .47"...is the .3 close enough?

With the magnet mounts, the tunze can rotate left to right, so if you rotate the tunze, and then put the magnet mount at an angle, the tunze points up. I got this tip from someone in the tunze forum a while back. Seems so obvious, but it had never struck me to try it. It makes a world of difference as far as sand storms go.

That's what I use too. My tank is 1/2" acrylic

This is exactly what I was talking about. You can also get creative and use the magnets upside down, which will help give you more options.

Yes, they are more than strong enough for 1/2" thick glass or acrylic.
