Tunze steam flow through PVC?

Hey all,

I was wondering if anyone had tried to direct the tunze flow through large diamter PVC... like 2" and above. I was thinking this because I'm planning on doing a 60 gallon cube in a few months and I was wondering if the pump could be hidden in the rock work with some PVC pipe so you could push water in many different directions while pulsing the whole thing.. Why I want to do this is because of the dimensions of the cube. I feel like there will just be too much flow crashing against one wall.

Peace,
John H.

You can do it, you need 47/50mm PVC. It will substatially reduce flow but it can be done.

How substantially?

How substantially?

Hey Roger,

How much flow (just a ballpark figure) would I lose if this were the case? I like the ability of the pulse, but if I lose a lot of flow then I might do a closed loop instead. Looking to use it in a 60 gallon cube.

Thanks,
John H.

Well, I honestly don't know. An approximation would be that a simple elbow, T or foot of pipe would cost you 35% of flow. The flow is very low pressure so not much resistance is required to hamper flow. With that said a Stream is an aweful lot for a 60gal tank and you probably can afford the reduction, just don't do anything major, put a T or an elbow and be done with it. In all honesty I think I would not recommend a Stream for such a small tank a 7400/2 would be much more suitable and you could use it as is, the tank would swirl like a toilet.

Oh no... :(

Oh no... :(

Oh Roger,

Why'd you have to rain on my parade. I've had my heart set on a tunze stream for so long. After seen it's performance a few tanks. I'm almost certain I must have it.... Yes.... I must own a tunze stream...

I could dial it way back... don't you think?

Peace,
John H.

I just don't see the flow performing as designed with only a 2ft area to fan out.

I'll try running it through some pipe...

Well,

I can always purchase it, try it out with the pipe system and resell it or just keep it around for when I do need it in the future. Plus, I've got a friend that will just buy it from me if it doesn't work it, so I guess there's nothing to lose.

Hehe. :) Thanks for all the info. Roger, hopefully you bring back lots of cool stuff to show us.

Peace,
John H.
