Tunze Stream as return pump?

I asked this same question through the TunzeUSA website last week, but haven't heard back yet.

The Tunze Stream description states that they are not suitable as filter pumps. My next tank will have dual returns. With the Turbelle Stream Kit TS24, I'd like to have each pump connected to a return from the sump, alternating flow with the multicontroller.

Is this a good or bad idea?

i don't think they handle head well, hence the "not recommended for..." not sure exactly though. never tried.

These pumps are essentially 0' head devices, they can't push water through a pipe. They won't function in the manner you mention.

As grim said, they cannot pump against head pressure they are very low pressure but high flow.

I probably should keep my mouth shut but everyone will know soon enough. We will have an electronically controllable return pump this fall. They look very nice but I have yet to use one.

I am glad you did not keep your mouth shut Roger, becuase I am in the market for a return pump for my twin 180 project..Do you have any specs yet for the pump? Will it be internal or external..pressure rated and what not?

Yes, just got the specs.

Their are three models. Imagine something like a very high performance large Mag Drive pump with built in electronic driver. They are only suitable for external use, while waterproof one side is a corrugated aluminum heat sink to cool the pump electronics and aluminum reacts with salt water. It has a 10m cable (about 36ft) It is grounded and has a safety thermostat. They can all be connected to the multicontroller or single controller with a special adapter.

The models are
1073.090

This one pumps 2377 gph at 130W of power, maximum head is about 15ft, the cost will be $333.43.

1073.140

This one pumps 3698gph and uses 230W of power. Maimum head is about 30ft and they will cost $553.07.

1073.160

This one pumps 4226 gph and will use 235W, max head is 18ft. This one will cost $533.15.

I don't expect to have them until November but I already placed an order for them.

I made a mistake and while the pumps are controllable it will require a seperate controller which is not yet available. The control technique is different from our other pumps.

If the pump is controllable, meaning that it will pump at different speeds at different intervals (right?), then won't the water level in the sump waver? Wouldn't that wreak havoc with auto-topoff devices, and cause other problems (like drain noise, etc.)?

That was exactly where my correction came in- it is controllable but not like the Streams or other pumps. It will be a simple flow control with a food pause possibly. The control doesn't exist yet, it is just a possibility we plan on. I made a mistake, my post was based on early rumors and the proof of the new catalog and I got clarification today.
