he may start to build it straight up.. but their base is in a circular pattern.. I have a bunch in my tank.. all have the circular base.. some turn into long tubes.. some stayed small and round

I personally like them.. some reefers don't.. if it starts to bother you.. you can plug him up with some glue..

There are different kinds of vermitids, but all do have the spiral pattern at the base. Some then grow straight out and some don't. The one you have is the type that stays mostly in a spiral. I used to have some like that in a previous tank.
