turkey baster for LR

Is it okay to use a turkey baster to gently blow over the LR in my 75 gall. tank to "dust" off the extra food and waste settled there, and if so, how often? Thanks!

A lot of people use the baster before a water change, that way you can suck up the detritus that gets suspend in the water.

Not only is it OK, but it's quite common! It's a great tool, just keep it "reef only"...don't go back to the thanksgiving bird with it. :)

It's also good for target feeding corals or anemones that need that special attention.

I use mine to target feed...I use another type of hard plastic tube when doing a WC to "vaccum" the rocks works real well get all detrius stuck in rocks and im sure to get it out instead of blowing it around my tank

Probably the most important and most used tool I have for my tank...I use it to clean rocks and corals before water changes, spot feed, and flip over the occasional snail/frag that gets moved.

I listened to Joe Yaiullo speak a few weeks ago, he has the 20,000 gallon tank on the East coast. He recommends "storming" the tank once a week. He uses massive pumps obvoiusly, but basically the same theory as a turkey baster just a much smaller scale.

So yes, its a good idea.

Good luck

A turkey baster? As in, "Five-dollar-baster-in-the-kitchen-isle-at-WalMart"?

Holy smokes, there's something in this hobby that I can buy without getting "the look" from my wife and a lecture about priorities? Woo-hoo!

I bet I can even buy that one without asking. :D

Seriously, that's a good idea. Obviously it's common sense to most of you but if you have any other inexpensive tips for a newbie I'd appreciate it. I think I've slept with dogs more often than not since I changed my tank over from fresh water. lol

Get a seperate bank account, and your own credit card........

Just remember to not use it for traditional use at Thanksgiving. The turkey grease messes up your skimmer. :D

Baste away-

Oh stop! Now you're making me choke up. :eek1:

Are we allowed to say "Dollar store" on these forums?

Maybe we need to revive that thread of good ideas that was around for YEARS. I know the turkey baster is in there along with some other cool stuff. I couldn't find it, anybody have it bookmarked?

I guess you can as I used in in a post 6 years ago about LR curing vats and over 190,000 people have read it. ;)

After a while of using the baster your hand hurts so I cut 3 inches of the tip of the baster and attached the tip to a powerhead with electrical tape. Great for cleaning pores and crevices and you can control how much flow and velocity you want by throttling the powerhead inlet with your thumb.
