Turning crushed coral into sand?

I just took down my parents 55 gallon african cichlid tank as they were outgrowing it (both the fish and the parents), while I may sell it with the stand on another topic....

I've got a 5 gallon bucket full of crushed coral (that needs to be rinsed out first ofcourse), and i want to bash it to pieces for my refugium's 6" sandbed..

unless anyone has some southdown sand or bags of other cheap sand that I could use.. Please help me come up with ideas to pulverize this crushed coral.

I am very angry

Give me my release please

A hammer maybe?

I would go outside and find a nice piece if concrete to work on. Then, using a regular hammer I would take one bit of crushed coral and hit it with the hammer - not to lightly so it doesnt crush, but not to heavy so that it sprays everywhere. You'll need to doa few test pieces to get it right. Once you get it down just repeat a few hundred thousnad times.

Ok seriously, as many people here have seen I'd DIY just about anything - but even this goes way beyond the cost/effort trade off.

You can pick up a bag of southdown for about $3 or spend days hammering coral. In fact - I have a need for a good amount of crushed coral and would give you a couple bucks for that bucket full which you could then use to go buy bags of sand. Much easier way to recycle...

Did your parents use RO/DI water? If not that crush coral might have absorbed all kinds of metals including coppers you wouldn't want in your reef. My babysitter might have a bag of southdown in his garage still which I asked him to hold for me. if not they are 4 bucks at HD probably in stock really soon.

the african cichlid tank was not ro/di but was always treated ro water with dechlorinators.

doug, I'm going to rinse out the crushed coral, you're more than welcome to take it, pm me.

where could i get southdown sand lately on the island?
