Uhh... I don't think I'm dealing with ich...

Well good thing for QT. About 2 weeks ago I bought an Achilles and this desjardini. Into QT they went. Then las week two potters wrasses went into the same QT. Achilles died Sunday and one potters died yesterday, today I finally get my stuff for TTM and I see this on the desjardini.

It does hang out at the HOB filter. Sideways and always goes into hiding. Still eats. Don't have formalin so I used Paraguard for now but I fear it may be too late.

Is this velvet?

If they died that fast usually it's velvet. Velvet has smaller spots if i am not mistaken.

Sigh. Maybe you're right. Then again they WERE an Achilles and potters. Not the two easiest fish. No doubt the QT has something, in which I have to leave the tank fallow now for 6+ weeks.

Timeline fits velvet or brook. I would order NLS Ick-Shield Powder (CP) and formalin ASAP.
Until that arrives you could try daily freshwater baths followed by a tank transfers. This should help against velvet, but likely not against brook.

The skin of the tang looks like it's sloughing off so I thought brook too.

With CP, I fear for the potters. How do you think it'll fare in the CP?

You could try daily formalin and/or freshwater baths followed by tank transfers with the wrasses. The freshwater baths should be as long as the fish can handle it.

The tang may be better off with CP.

My recommendation: give new fish always a formalin bath.
And while I've done it before as well, it is best not to add new fish to a QT that has already fish in it for a while.

Just ordered ick shield, although I've had bad results with eBay CP in the past.

I'm worried.

With fresh water dips, can it be done tomorrow or should I do them now? The tang exhibits symptoms of either brook (loss of color and skin reaction) and velvet (hanging out by the overflow). Sigh....

Ich shield should be sealed when you get it under the lid, if it isn't I personally believe that once CP is exposed to air it starts to degrade. I only use my CP for a month or a little more and then throw away and buy new. If you freshwater dip or formalin dip you will need sterile tanks to put the fish in each time otherwise the bath will give temp relief but will be short lived if going back into the same tank with the current infection. Thankfully you QT because this could be a total loss otherwise

Things that can handle heat I usually just boil. Everything else gets soaked overnight in a tank full of bleach I have on the balcony.

So with a help of a friend, I was able to use some of his formalin, did a bath for about 40-45 mins. The wrasse and tang did well and are alive this morning. The tang darkened up in the bath, stress colors I'm assuming, but when in the TTM tank, it's very pale.

There is what appears to be a mucous layer for sure around the fish. Poor guy. Eats normally today, seems happier.

What do I do at this point? Do more dips? Is it ok to return it to the same TTM tank after the dip? Common logic says no. If it was velvet or brook wouldn't both be dead by now?

As for formalin, can it be used per instructions in the TTM tank-not as a dip- but as a low concentration bath? This is the first time I've ever used this stuff and I ordered a huge bottle yesterday.

The tang isn't as listless as it was yesterday.

Fish, after dipping need to go to clean water. One strategy is to put formalin in the TTM tank at the end of the cycle, then put the fish into the next ttm cycle tank.

Yes, last night they went into clean water.

Steve, when you say add formalin into the TTM tank at the end of the cycle, do you mean add it at dip concentrations (i.e. 20 drops/gallon) for the last 1 hr before transfer or the bath concentration (I think 5 drops per gallon) for the whole day?
