Ultimate Clown System.

Magnifica's really need a tank of at least 75gl i would say, and usually do best mounted high on a stack of rock under bright light and high water flow... i wouldnt go with that unless you get a tank of that size either....
They are gorgoeus tho...

sounds good to me reef. I think 50X50 should be plenty. I might be tempted to go 24" high though but that's personal taste only.

Dan- Well, a 48x48x18 is (roughly) a 180 gal. system..reason im going that shallow is because i have 250w MHs and want to get the most out of them..plus id love to have a tank i could see from the top..Plus i love the look of shallow reefs..:)

I can't wait to see it. Much better to watch you build it than think about spending that kind of cash on my own! :D

a 24x24 x 16" cube, with 2 surge tanks fireing out of the back wall bouncing off the front glass. a single 250 HQI ballast firing a single ended reeflux 12KK lamp. Deep sand bed (except for the front corners where the surges fire). Load it with some zoas or SPS and a gigantea anemone. Those clowns should have the best;)

Sounds like your talking about yours:)

My plan have not change. We have ordered the glass cut to make the tank. 30X24X24Rather than divide the tank I may just use a drain pipe and keep the show tank at 30X24. Thih way, I have room for a H. magnifica and a S. gigantea. I have not decide on this yet.

Cool thread, I hope you guys don't mind me butting in here..

I am about to upgrade my 20g to a cube of somewhere from 50-60g. I was thinking of setting up a species only tank, anemone and clowns... with my remaining SPS , clam, and zoos . No surge action on this new tank though, can't afford it and it just doesn't work with my room/setup.

Recently I was supposed to get my hands on a blue S. Haddoni, but as mentioned, they eat fish (including clowns) And the owners clowns were eaten the night before I was to pick it up.

Long story short, I am due for an upgrade (like.. this month) and, I haven't been able to decide which direction I want this tank to go in... SPS, mixed, zoos, etc.. but now, I think I would really enjoy a clown/anemone tank , with the anemone being the focal point of the tank. (I have always loved clowns, over any other fish in the hobby, anemones fasinate me, and this is the reason I started reefing)

I currently have a Geisemann Nova II 250w HQI, so this has to work on my next tank, but something along the lines of 24x24x15 or so .. It should turn out ok, what do you guys think?

As for an anemone, this is where I am unsure. I have kept many BTA's/RBTA's/GBTA's since I have started reef keeping. Needless to say they are getting a little "boring" .. I am up for the challenge of a new species of anemone here, and I have lost interest in carpets because of their reputation for eating fish, and sebae's just don't quite do anything for me as they used to (although I do find them nice, just not nice enough to keep one long-term) .. the Magnifica is looking ideal. The only problem is my tank size..

I feel I could meet the requirements for a Mag, being 250w HQI , and water movement will be anywhere from 3-4 Seio 620's (i forget the model # of the Seio's) .. so flow won't be "surged" or random, but should do the trick, any input here?

Lastly, I wouldn't know where to order a Mag , as I am in Canada.. and the LFS's dont bring them in very often around here.. what would be the best route to go?

Again, sorry this is a huge hijack, but I figured this is the best place to put it now!

24X24, 250W HQI and a magnifica sounds like a good plan to me. In fact, as I was reading your post magnifica was the first anemone that came to my mind as well.

As for where to get one I can't help there. Living in San Francisco area means I'm pretty lucky as far as finding livestock.

Good luck.

A smaller H. mganifica should do well in a 24X24 space. It need lots of current and lots of light. You should avoid in tank PH in a tank this size with a large anemone.
S. haddoni do eat fish but not clowns that natually associated with it. Clarkii or Saddle back should do fine with a Haddoni carpet.
If you want to keep H. magnifica or S. gigantea, you must se up a tank catter to their need. A gerneric SPS Reeftank if have high flow and high light may be OK for H. magnifica. Reefers thinking of keeping S. gigantea need to tailor their tank to this anemone.

Why does this setup sound eerily familiar? Like I've seen it somewhere before... hrmmmm ...

Thanks guys.. quick replies.

Good to know that a Mag should stand a good chance in this setup. Getting antsy just thinking about a new setup, it's going to be nice! I am pretty tired of the 20g .

The powerhead issue is most concerning to me at the moment. I don't want a sump, closed loop, etc, etc... the tank is in my bedroom and unfortunately this is the only spot for a tank, and to boot I am the worlds lightest sleeper, so noise from a sump, anything... it doesn't work for me hahah

I guess I'll have to cut foam inserts for the Seio intakes and keep on top of cleaning them . I really wish there were actual intake guards for Seio's .

And I should have cleared up, I know some carpets will eat clowns, that aren't natural hosts, I just don't want to take any chances.. and a S. gigantea is just not going to work for me .

If anyone in Canada knows where I can find a nice healthy Magnifica please let me know! I can't find any around town (Calgary, Alberta) But it's okay as I won't need it until the system is up and stable (should be within a couple weeks at most)

Thanks again for the replies !

Ok, just ordered a 38x38x18 glass tank (had to be custom made). Do you suggest having a canopy on a tank like that? or a light pendant? IF so, which one is a good 1? (I have many SPS so light is a priority).

With a tank that short I wouldn't put a canopy on it. I have a canopy on my 20L which is only 12" tall. Unless the tank is really high the canopy will block a lot of the view when you are standing near it. This will be particularly bad the further you try to look into the tank. Plus if you ever put clams in you'll want to be able to see them from above.

edit: I dont' know about which pendant to use, sorry.

I have a friend that has a perfect tank for you... and we arent far at all.... wish I had seen this just a bit earlier.... anyway sorry, I will have to swing by and see it when it is all set up....
