I have a sump that is drilled and I need it for an application that requires it not to be. is it as simple as putting a piece of glass over the 1.75" hole and siliconing it down? how much overlap do I need? is it ok to use GE silicone II?
I would use a piece about 4x4" to be safe, it's cheap. Silicone and install from the inside.
Do not use GE Silicone II, it is for kitchen and bath which has an anti-mildew additive that is not reef safe. GE Silicone I is reef safe, and works well on glass.
I did this. I had drilled a hole in my tank and realized later that i didnt want the hole. I took the piece of glass that i cut out and the put it back in place with aquarium silicone so it would be sort of flush and then I put a 1' x 1' 1/4" piece of glass on the back. Aquarium silicone on all of that.
I did the glass and silicone method a few years ago and it worked for about 6 months then it started leaking. I would go with the bulkhead and plug method.
its fitted with a bulkhead and a cap now under my big tank, but its fate lies under a smaller tank I have almost done and interior cabinet space is at a premium. I went with option C: buying a used one and not having to worry about it leaking.
I also have a 180 with 3 holes in the back glass I would really like to seal up and get it bottom drilled to fit flush up against a wall. is there any way to accomplish this?
