unhappy Valentines day :(

Yesterday my husband bought me a fairy wrasses for Valentines Day. He bought them from the pet store here in town. I put them in the Q-tank and they looked fine, eating and active. Tonight I noticed they have tiny white spots on their body. I went to the pet store and they gave me some Mardel Maroxy and also some Mardel Maracide. The Maracide says its for freshwater fish. I asked him about this and he said it was fine for salt water also. I have not put anything in the tank yet. I wanted advice first before I started adding meds. I really don't want to loose the fish if possable. Also, the pet store won't take back fish they sell. Is there someone that can tell me what would be the best to do for the fish?

:) good for qt are the spots like the fish has been sprinkled with salt? are the meds for ick, is the fish scratching? as far as the medication i cant say what there are used for curing

First, thing, change lfs's. That's a bad attitude.

Secondly, if it says Maracyn it can be used in both salt and fresh. But Maracyn is not a treatment for ich, so far as I know, and if they have a white rash, you have ich. First thing you need to do is put the fish in quarantine, a bare, plain tank, NOT your display tank. Second thing is to know precisely what you need for hyposalinity treatment. Hang in, and someone will give you that number.

the fish IS in a quarantine tank. I never never ever put fish in my main tank unless im sure they are ok first. ;) The stuff they gave me at the pet store is not Maracyn it says Maracide concentrate on the bottle. Is that the same thing?

Sounds like ich. If you could you may want to post some pics of the fish so we can id the parasite. The two most effective treatments for ich are copper and hyposalinity.

Oh, and they are not scratching as far as I can tell. I have not seen them rub on anything. They do look like they have salt on them. only a few spots here and there. Not a lot. By the way, the Maracide says on the bottle its for freshwater fish. But the pet store owner says its for saltwater also. Thats why I was asking.

I wish I could post a pic. I know that helps. As of right now though, I have no way of taking a pic. Sorry :( I can only tell you what I see. It just looks like teeny tiny white specks. maybe about 10 ish spicks? Im guessing. Where can I get these treatments you are talking about?

I'm betting that the active ingredient is Maracyn, ---cide---only means 'kill' in Latin. But copper and hypo are the treatments of choice for ich, a parasite; the maracyn will cure bacterial infections, which this is NOT. Come on, someone, what is the salinity level and rate of decrease for hypo. It's been so long since I had serious ich, I've forgotten.

Note: feeding your fish Formula One Sinking Pellets with Garlic will help them throw it off.

ok, I can get the formula one pellets tomorrow morning. The active ingredient in this stuff I have says purified water, aniline green, tris aminomethane. Thats all it says. Here is a link to the stuff.

It even says there its for only fresh water fish. Pet store told me they used it on their saltwater fish. I think I will just take it back and get my money back. What did mom always say, "When in doubt do without."?

Do a search here on hyposalinity. The med you are using won't work. You can read one of the permanent threads in this forum on Cryptocaryon (Ich).

Thanks for all your help. They seem to be doing fine and looking much better. I will keep up with the hyosalinity and have been giving copper safe. They are finaly getting their color back and eating great. Very active little buggers. Thanks again for your help. Everyone on RC is a great help!
:)

I would not suggest combining hyposalinity with copper. The pH tends to drop in diluted saltwater and copper quickly becomes more toxic as the pH falls.
