One of the most important aspects of keeping planted FW tanks is the addition of CO2. Just as reefers use large CO2 bottles, regulators, bubble counters and such, planted tank folks are very well aware of the necessity of injecting CO2 into the water for good plant growth. I can't justify the costs of this particular method, but I do use yeast and sugar water for the same effect.
I would say that the biggest difference between my planted tank and my reef is that the reef grows animals, and the FW tank grows plants.
