Update on Cujo the A. Nigripes clown

When I was raising nigripes fry, the most deaths of larvae, as well as metamorphed fish, was when I moved them or tried cleaning the tank. They didn't take kindly to it. Got scared to death. I figured if I ever tried them again, they would only be moved once, into a small reef tank that could handle all the overfeeding. Lots of sand and rocks. Hope Cujo pulls through. Keep us posted.

Well...

Well...

..what good is an update without pic's? 14 days in for junior(yes that is airline to the left):

Cujo is hanging in there. Not real pleased and I have backed down the temps and diet to bring her out of breeding mode. Eating decently....hoping she weathers the storm I imposed but I am likely going to take the pair out to a barebottom if she is not really looking good by the weekend.

Just a SWAG...looks like 25 fry are robust....15 are mediocre...another 15 are still rotifer feeding size. My target is the 25 at this stage.

2 moves for this batch support your ideas Dan; lost half each time :( Couple that with physical egg damage while on the tile....figure 2-300 potential fry lost due to my incompetence.

I am cheating next round, though. 25gal barrel liner, tile cut in advance to fit into the 2gal bowl, bowl in barrel liner, tip it out at day 5-7ish.

In addition, I moved the fry area over to the larger system with the 'gasters... I am sure they appreciate the new "love and attention" to their water quality :D (they provide the new waterchange water in slow drip form)

At this stage, figure Cujo is going to make it, but she will add at least 2 scars to the existing list. She(we) are dealing with a persistent mouth wound at the moment....you know the bleeding and defying treatment/eating type :(

How is everyone doing Scott?
Well the ones I am not killing seem to be doing well when I am not "helping" them :D

Cross your fingers :)

Nice work...Keep it up dad. :D
Sure, sure, keep up the pressure!

:D

Give Cujo a treat from my medicine cabinet (brown/yellowish box from the antibiotic pile in the basement). Cannot remember the name of the drug atm...

Well, not so nice going :(

Cujo has continued to decline over the last week. Body looks clear, but lost bouyancy control and has not eaten since :( She is in isolation, prazi and fura based meds.

I have not had one of my clowns make a full recovery from this stage, but we'll stay on her.

Male is fat dumb and happy, although a bit shy by himself in the breeder tank.

20+ fat fry swimming around with pot bellies of otohime, crushed flake, and infrequent live brine. Single head stipe at the moment, some are black aft of the pelvic fins, some are light orange...go figure. Make note, these were not the largest of the batch, they are the mid's and small's, so we'll see how they turn out over time.

Wish I had better news, but it is where we are :(

Lost Cujo overnight :(

I know of a few of you folks that have single mature nigripes. Not sure whether I'll raise juveniles to pair with the male, ship him out while still a male, or beg borrow and steal for a female.

Cujo passing on takes quite a bit of "enthusiasm" out of the hobby for me, if I did not have the 'gasters and Cujo's fry I'd likely take a break. Bummed to say the least.

sorry for your loss scott, i know just how deep a blow like that can take.

good luck with the fry and those beautiful chrysogasters.

Very sorry to hear this news, black footed clowns have alwyas been a favorite of mine and the stories about Cujo were always verry entertianing.

Have seen people keep a bunch of pink skunks, with 1 dominant piar and a bunch of Juvys all living in peace. I dont know if Negripes would behave the same way, but is sure would be cool to see a bunch of em living in a big nem.

Best of luck,
Chris

Wow, sorry to hear this happened. :(

Sorry to hear that man.....FWIW, I've been told that Nigripes are the most peaceful clowns in groups....you could keep the male with a couple of the fry when they get larger and start up again.

Appreciate the sentiments and it sure is time consuming watching Cujo's fry going through meta stages; for all the right reasons :) A few are now orange, with stripe, and swimming like "clowns".

The smiles while looking at "swimmers" make it difficult to offset poor decision making on my part. Figure a 25wt heater and cheapo air pump might have changed the final outcome. Can't emphasize enough how bad planning is just that, bad and ill advised. I should know better.

If I had more confidence in the male being 100% healthy, I'd ship him out to a known breeder with a female before he made the change. Unfortunately, I think it is best to keep him in isolation for at least 6 weeks to make sure he is solid. Prob will pull him and treat him like a new arrival just to be safe, let the tank go fishless for a few weeks, maybe even tear it down.

Focus now is to make sure 20+ of Cujo's fry make it and see if we can get a handful of nice orange pairs out to folks.

Side note: Lots of doner water changes to the fry, more feeding, increase in temps seems to have gotten the 'gasters back in action....but that is another story ;>)
