update on the ich

Xian, just have to stick the powerhead low int he sandbed, and let it swirl the water around the bottom then and suck up sand...... :p

awsome topic. the trouple here is that how can we tell when all ich parasites are gone. has anyone studied dormant periods when opportunity is low? u spoke about temp and that is clearly a sign but what about fish that harbor ich? i have read studies of perfectly healthy fish that harbor ich. once opportunity rises it attacks but what if we do not let an opportunity knock? does the fish continue to harbor the ich? and when these "experts" speak of harboring do they mean it is dormant? and how long can ich stay dormant? here a site that mentions this qoute
"It is commonly thought that Ich lies dormant in all fish tanks, just waiting for an opportunity to attack. This is not accurate. However, it is possible that a resistant fish or group of fish can harbor a low level of Ich infection without obvious symptoms until stress of some kind reduces the fish's ability to fight it off. Then the infection becomes full-blown, seemingly"

tuff subject as the info is so varied!

amy make sure your dissolved oxygen is high. you may want to add an air stone in the display to keep the fishes gills from being infected. this is when things really go down hill. rapid breathing and a loss of energy is naoted at this point . avoid the gills from being attacked as this is an over the top stress factor.
