any suggestions on battling my obvious algae problem would be appreciated. thanks.

are those fish also called clingfish? how big do they get? i have a 20 and i really want to get a nice slender streamline fish such as that.

If you get the right amount of astrea snails and turbo grazer snails, they will mow that down in no time. I had a worse hair algae problem than you and they cleaned everything within a week.I do no scrubbing. Start with 8 of each.See how it works.

Turbos and Astrea are poor choices in a Nano because of the size they will obtain; I'd recommend cerith and nerites as they will do an equally good job of munching algae while not growing too large for your tank.

If you have an LFS in the area willing to trade out livestock as it grows, then the turbos are okay.
Again if willing, a Queen Conch is an excellent scavenger for keeping the substrate clean and eating the tougher forms of micro and macro algae.
Most LFS would prefer to have larger conchs for their customers, however within the trade most arrive at merely an inch or smaller.
This is a perfect pairing for Nano keepers and their LFS if willing to swap.

everlong- clingfish are a little different from pipefish, your probably thinking of the yellow stripe clingfish. mine are african bluestripe pipefish ( doryrhamphus excisus). i think a pair would be fine in a 20 gal. I would highly recommend that you get a pair that feeds on frozen or get a large refugium on the tank because my pair cleaned out my pod population within three days. You could also try to train them to frozen or bbs but this is kind of tricky, especially since pipefish do not have stomachs and they will quickly starve without a food supply. mine feed on frozen mysis. From my expeirience with pipefish and from what i have heard and read bluestripes seem to readily take frozen mysis in the aquarium. You may also want to try cyclopeeze. I would ask your lfs to feed them for you or if you order them online ask if they feed on frozen. They do not like a lot of flow and i would recommend a good filter.

good luck!

hows the water params? any detectable phosphates? if everything looks good i would say a few more snails- maybe even a lettuce nudi- i got one and it mowed down the algae in my 29, plus he was cool to watch.
