Updated Photos of 2 Gallon Cube

Agu,
I think you're probably right. I stopped by the tank yesterday to add a couple new corals and learned from my coworkers that Ike had smashed a couple branches off of my pink birdsnest - to use as barricades into his cave.
I didn't want him to repeat that behavior so I used a couple pieces of LR rubble to close up his lair for him. Hopefully it does the trick - I just added a purple and a green acropora as well as a purple gorgonia and green blastos.

Maybe I missed it....what size are the bulkheads? Where did you get them? Considering going with a 1/4" John Guest quick disconnect bulkhead for a similar nano but those look a bit bigger.

They are half inch, and then sized down to 1/4. I might be selling this tank as im setting up a bigger custom tank and need the extra funds.

Yeah chad it sucks but ive had a hard time finding all the parts i need to make it run smoothly, and im creating a custom 15 right now. It seems i have the same craving as you to just go bigger!

The tank is sweet tho.

tis is definitely a must-read thread. I'm setting up an office nanao--do you remember wehre you got the office lamp you used originally for the pc's? all the ones I've found point the bulb downward, whereas yours looks like the length of the bulb is parallel to the desktop, which would be more efficient. Any ideas? Also, how hot do those self-ballasted pc's run?

Thanks,
Christine

Christine,
Thanks. I believe that I found the pc lamp at Walmart or Zellers, I will try and get the model name so that you can search for them. The pc bulbs get hot enough that you can't hold on to them for too long... they are way cooler than halide, but to get proper penetration, I had to put them closer to my water surface. The result... even though the buld is a lot cooler, I think that it transfered just as much heat to my tank as the halide did (the halide is up higher and allows for more circulation). t is a good lamp though and I plan on working it into my setup again as supplimentation so that I can have a dawn/dusk effect. HTH

hey chad,

i was wondering what prevents sand from being blown away from the return? did you glue the sand together with resin like some people do for the aesthetic look of sand? is the flow just weak enough to not blow the sand away but enough for water circulation in the tank?

your cube fascinates me

-james

Hey James,
If I remember correctly there is about 30x turnover in the tank. The reason that the sand doesn't get blown around is that the current hits the surface of the water and then breaks into a random turbulance that sweeps throughout the while tank. I think I would have had trouble with sand blowing around if the flow was more concentrated on one spot.
Thanks!

Chad i am definetley setting up the cube again! LOL As of right now i can run it one of two ways.It can be set up to run like before but with a closed loop on the bottom w/ heater and mag2,or as a zero edge tank that overflows itself. Im still in the collection stage of parts to run it zero edge,i need a top off switch, and i really want an aquamedic 70w to hang over it.

Either way this tanks coming back to life soon! Deac

Deac,
That sounds awesome brother. Either way you set it up, I would highly recommend a dosing pump like the one that I had on the tank. It can pump into a pressurized system like a closed loop without risk of backflow (rated to 100psi!!!) and is super accurate. You can set it to dose anywhere from 0.4ml per hour all the way up to 30gallons per day. I litteraly set it to dose ro/di water at the exact rate that it evaporated in my setup - 0.75ml every three minutes.
If you were interested, I know the lady that has it now is considering selling it for $180Can. Not too bad for a piece of kit that goes for $700.
Either way, I can't wait to see what you do with the cube.
Cheers,

Wow wicked respose chad ty,i have stuff to think about now.The zero edge method is pretty unique and i have the tray already made,it also allows me to run a sump and cheap top off and also a small skimmer if needed.Thats IS one hell of a deal tho for the dosing pump........Expect a PM in a few days.......:) cheers deac

Sounds good buddy, the current owner is a Canreef member too.
I am half-hopeing that you will go with the 0-edge - just 'cause I want to see it in action! Best of luck.

Its amazing that u can still see clearly through the overflowing panes! Also i dont even think zero edge brand tanks use starfire glass,so it should be cool.I think with all the plumbing and stuff ive already bought its going zero edge.i can also use the 2 holes both for returns and run a scwd in there.Either way i'm like within days of getting it going......I just tracked down a float switch too ($5)

The hard part will be making it as cool as when you owned it.;)

just curious, but is there a link to what you used for a dosing pump? I would like to set up an ATO similar to that for my tank at college. Thanks ninjafish!

You can see the pump in a couple of my videos - when I was designing my project, I had to go outside of made-for-hobby equipment in order to have something that I could really trust.
It is a laboratory/industrial grade diaphragm metering pump. Mine is made by Advantage Controls but other big names are LMI, Milton Roy, and Pulsatron. Iwaki makes a metering pump as well but it doesn't seem to have as many options as the other brands.
The model that I went with has a fully digital display that allows me to toggle between "strokes/minute" to "strokes/hour" for really low dosing rates - as I said, it was taking care of my 2gallon cube... I'd just fill the resivoir bucket with ro/di water and could go three weeks before I needed to fill it up again. It is the only pico tank that I have ever heard of that never experienced ANY variation in salinity - even my 90gal wasn't that stable.

Here is a link to the one I had:

I had the 'A series' and it was really nice because of the digital display. HTH.

AIMFish,
They retail for $800+ easy for the basic models.

In fact, some of these companies are not even interested in selling to you unless you are representing a company/institute/university etc.

I have seen them on Ebay on more than a few occassions. I would look there if I were you. I would have got one myself if it wasn't for the ~$100 of shipping to Australia.

Chad: I remember reading this a few months back. I read it now, and I am still amazed at its beauty. Now you have tempted me to setup a second tank!
