Updated Photos of 2 Gallon Cube

JustFin, Cuervo, and Bob - Thanks a lot you guys. I didn't even know what was going on until I went back and reread the thread of the month post... all this time I thought "you've got my vote" was just a figure of speach. lol. I really appreciate the nomination and everyone who voted for my tank!
Thanks,

- Chad

350z,

Thank you, I'm glad you like it. It is 8"x8"x8". I had it custom made so that means you can get one absolutley anywhere that people make tanks :p . It is up to the glass shop what they will charge you but I got this one for $60 Canadian. That is with the bulkheads drilled and starfire glass. I have been a customer there for quite a while so it may be discounted... I'm not really sure.
Cheers,
- Chad

I hope everyone on this thread has voted for this thread as "Thread of the Month".

It's a close race - and I personally feel that the innovations that Chad has put into this tank are far and away more important to be noted than the other threads.

Vote guys and gals!

James,
I really appreciate your comments here and in the voting thread! It was a nice surprise to be nominated, but all of the support from my peers has just been awesome!

Update:

I am replacing the eheim 2222 cannister filter with an eheim 2128 pro II. The new cannister has some better connections but the main advantage is that it will has an extra media basket and three times the volume!
Last night I drilled the hole for the pond light wiring:

I used a small piece of the electrical cord to make the hole just barely big enough. The tighter I can make the fit, the less I will have to depend on the silicone to keep it water proof.

Obviously, going from a filter with an output of 132gph to one with an output of 280gph is a pretty big change. Especially when the tank is only 2gals :p . I had planned on cutting down the impellor blades on the new filter to reduce the flow, but fortunately eheim - bless their hearts - saved me the trouble. Here you can see the 2128 impellor wearing the blades from the 2222 - a prefect fit!

Updates to follow in the next couple days.

I've always viewed mantis shrimps as a critter to avoid, but your tank makes them look so favorable...almost makes me want to flip my tank over and start a mantis tank myself.

oh yea, close race in the TOTH. i hope you win

Why did you choose to grow a macro?? i would think all that liverock would be overkill compared to the small bioload. How is it growing with the light/set-up?

I always thought that mantis shrimp were interesting animals, but after owning one I am amazed at how much personality they have (or seem to have). They really do make a great pet - the key is that you devote the tank to them and don't keep anything that is more valuable than the mantis.

And thank you for your kind words in the TOTH thread. I have been avoiding posting there because I don't want to toot my own horn but the support from everone else has been great.

And that means you too Jamesurq! :D

Qwiv,
I have been convinced of the benefits of chaetomorpha for a long time. Infact the cannister filter mod came as a result of me deciding that I wanted to grow macro. Obviously, it is great for nutrient export - and I am rapidly learning that a two inch mantis is a little more bioload than expected . The other benefit is that it oxygenates the water and provides a place for the pods too grow. If excess nutrients begin to build up and outpace my water changes, than the macro just grows that much bigger to consume them - and that comes in handy in a small water volume like this, where small problems can become big ones really fast.
Thanks,

- Chad

And I couldn't resist adding another photo:

This is Ike lying on his back chewing on the remains of a hitchhiker xanthid crab. I don't know the reason why it lies on its back and almost cuddles its food, but it strikes me as being a very contented dog-like posture.
Crazy animal :p

If everything goes smothely, today is the big day for upgradeing the cannister filter.

Until then,

- Chad

Good luck with the filter, Chad. Are you going to upgrade the submersible light? Do you give your chaeto a light break?

Thanks Ben! I keep the chaeto lit 24/7 just to prevent ph spikes and to keep my temperature constant. I do not plan on upgrading the lights because even one bulb is enough light that the chaeto reqularily outgrows the media compartment and has to be pruned. I am trying to replace the burned out bulb but it is proving to be a bit of a pain. I bought some 5w 12v halogen bulbs off of ebay that look exactly like the ones I am using. The problem is, the one I tried yesterday wouldn't fire. The original bulb works fine in either fixture but the replacement works in neither. Your tank is looking great Ben. I wouldn't worry about going to halide unless you really wanted to. The canopy makes it all look neat and tidy and the color from your pc is amazing. The only real benfit I could see would be the shimmer effect. Cheers.

Does any one else know why the new bulb might not be working? Is there another quality besides wattage and voltage that would affect whether or not a light bulb works? They are both halogen lights, look identical, and the filiment on the new one looks intact. I will try another one of the new bulbs today but any input that people have would be appreciated! Thanks,

- Chad

Chad..... The only thing that I can think of would be to check the "resistance" across the filament.... compare the readings of the good bulb and the bad bulb.... Any decent meter should work for you... If one bulb ( I assume the bad one will read much higher ) reads different, "high" resistance, that will give you your reason.... Also, compare the part number or markings on the side of the bulbs to make sure they are the same......

Good luck...

Bob
