Updated Photos of 2 Gallon Cube

Ok, Chad. You're making it hard for me to put the Nano off until I get the 24 cube done!

Every picture makes it more difficult!

But, I really like the pics.

It looks better each time you take new pictures.

Thanks.

Dr,
I really don't mean to sway you  but here's that mantis photo that I promised:

Here Ike just burrowed underneath the wall of his cave and - wow - found himself on the other side. :p

There are very little good things that were not already said about
your tank, but I'll try: I find it inspiring! Thanks for sharing!

Do I understand correctly that your office desk has a rather large
hole in it under the tank (for the plumbing pipes)?

Do you ever measure Alk/Ca/pH? I'm just curious if <20% weekly water
changes can offer enough replenishment...

Mihai

Chad,
He gets the tanks in a few different sizes. Really reasonable for the size and quality. I do not know how well they will ship, but you may be able to work something out with him whereyou buy it from him via credit card, then he drops it off at like a Mailboxes Etc and you pay them for shipping via credit card. When I got the tank I did and I told him I may need more he said he could probably work out the shipping somehow. I am right outside Atlanta, and he is right outside Philadelphia.

Mihai,
Thank you. You are right there is a hole in the top of the desk but it is just a 4" rectangle that the computer cables are supposed to run through. When I first saw the desk, I measured it and then had a tank built so that the bulkheads would be in the right place.
I used to measure religiously but admit that it has been some time since I have checked water parameters. I am getting really good growth and believe that 15-20% water changes every week keep levels where they should be. I have never heard any recommend doing more than 20% every week...

Thanks Chad, then I'll try to get a desk with computer cable holes then.

Regarding water changes for replacement of Ca and Alk see this month's issue of RK. The conclusion is that for nutrient export 10-20% is fine, but not for Ca and Alk replacement... However, if they used to be OK some time ago, there are probably not serious reasons for going stray now.

Keep up the good job,
M.

I am bad at tank pics, but I am going to the office tomorrow, I will try to get a good one so you can see what it is like.

perpetual98, these arent cube tanks however they have curves front corners no seams and they have no frame, they are all glass.

David,
Thanks for the information. I look forward to seeing the photos!

Mihai,
Thanks for the reference. I will check out that article - might have to do two water changes a week?...

Haha and thanks Jeff!

nice...makes me want to make one for work. I think ill try it with aptasia first to see how it goes.

Hi Chad,

Tank looks as stunning as ever! Just thought I'd let you know in case you ever need to do it again that drilling the sides of the Eheims is actually okay! I did it last night and it was really easy (made lots of noise though). THe main thing seems to be not pushing too hard. Have you got the new Cannister plumbed in yet or are you still using the 2222?

Ed

Thanks Moe!
Itsmee and Herogien,
Do it you guys. I have to warn you though - you wont get as much work done with a distraction like this!

Ed,
Nice work brother! I'm glad that things worked out and can't wait to see how your project goes.
And yes I am now using the 2128 cannister - it gives me three times the filter volume and an extra media compartment. I fitted the impellor blades from the 2222 onto the 2128 impellor. The result is that my water velocity is roughly the same as it was before!

Cheers,

- Chad

Sweeeeet!

PICS!!!!

I've got the 2222 but it's flow is going to be severely reduced by the union so I've bought a MaxiJet 500 too. I'll either run a 2nd closed loop or put the two in series. Can't wait to play!

Ed

Is there something that can be done cheaper than an Eheim canister filter for water movement? I understand how you want to have a canister filter instead of a sump because you want the closed loop. If you had a sump and the power went out, you'd have an empty display tank. How about a pump in a sealed container of some sort?

Yup, same principle. As long as you have a sealed closed loop, anything would work. I think you will find though that a cannister filter is the cheapest and easiest answer. Don't buy one new but get a used one and it will cost you less than buying a pump and making a container. I'm sure you could find a used fluval for $40 or less. If all you are woried about is water movement, you don't even need a cannister. A closed loop to a pump and back will be sufficient. The reason that I can up with the cannister mod is because I also wanted to have space for a chaeto fuge and additional LR.
