Upgrading a sump

If I get a 10g sump for my 40b, is it easy to upgrade later to a 30g or so sump? If I planned for it, could all of the plumbing stay the same and then just swap out the tank when I get it?

Being that the dimensions of a 30 gallon tank are different than the 10, you'll probably have to modify your plumbing a little, but other than that it should be pretty easy to swap out. GL.

My sump built by someone else if drilled. So everything is hard piped. I would like another sump in the future because their is no room for a refudge. But for the time being it will have to do. If I do upgrade it will be a flex pipe onto the current pvc pipe.

I'll always error on the side that if you know you want to do *name something* and do it bigger or better later, then hold off and do what you want the first time. You need to price out what the difference of doing the 10 vs 30 and if it means waiting a few extra weeks. Then why not wait and do it right?

Yes, you could do it that way but think about it. You are gonna have the cost of setting up 10 sump and then still have to buy the 30. Seems kind of more expensive to me.

Ou8me2 - Yeah, I usually go with the same thought process. The issue here is that I planned on building mine, which will take a bit. I can get the 10g sump, cheap skimmer, and socks all for $20 - Along with some macroalgae. It's a pretty good deal. We are getting carpet installed soon, and that's when I am going to drill my 40B and install the overflow system. I really just need something to "catch" the water and pump it back. That's the only reason I am thinking about going this route.
