Where do you have it placed? If you have it on your rockwork it could have "hopped" itself off or something knocked it off. If it's in the sand someone must be pulling a joke on you. 
Seriously though, it could be many things. I can say that they will not turn themselves upside down. It wouldn't be beneficial or possible for them to do on their own - I don't think. I've seen stranger things.

I have one that I have had for about two weeks. I found it yesterday on it's side and put it back. about 4 hours later it was down, and again this morning and this afternoon.
It sets on a rock in the sand and had not moved sence i put it in the tank. any Idea why? It looks healthy and is opened very well.

It's not going to walk away across your tank In moving, they seem to have more of an ability to "adjust" themselves rather than actually moving real far. My research indicated placing croceas on rock work upright to attach. However, my crocea wants to lay at about a 45 degree angle. If I set it upright it will move itself back into the same position. Mine didn't like the rock work at all so I have to put it in the sand with a rock underneath. After looking closely at this species for a while, I'd have to say that they tend to prefer the position they move themselves into rather than sitting straight up like tridacnas. Size may be a factor as well. Mine is only 4" or so. I'd say as long as it's not gaping and closes up at night and responds well to shadows, it's good to go. I like to sweep my hand in front of the lights to create a shadow every once in a while to get them to react as they would in nature. (Predator fish)
