Just found this funny, my tuxedo urchin had picked up two small pieces of chaeto a while back and now he has his own wig growing. :lmao: Haven't snapped a pic yet but my emerald crab will jump on from time to time for a snack too

haha! mine is wearing his lunch, too!

i never know, from one day to the next, what my urchin is gonna be hauling around. i have seen him with polyps, shells, and recently found him packing around one of my feather duster worms. too funny!

Its funny because typically this has been the case with mine, he grabs new stuff all the time...until he picked up the chaeto that is, seems he has found his favorite accessory :wildone:

i have a fuge with chaeto but unfortunately i have a lot of cyano and other algaes, peopel here have told me that if it isnt getting into the dt dont worry about it, do you think if i leave the urchin in the fuge and let it eat away at the different algaes i will be okay and it will leave the chaeto alone for a while, or will it completely consume it?

the only reason i put the chaeto in my dt is because the light on the back of my tank that lights my little fuge fell off and i need to get somebody out here to help me get it back on (small space to work in, need an extra set of hands).

this started out as a baseball-size piece of chaeto. in a matter of a few days, it's golf-ball size now. happy, happy urchin!

Hmm honestly don't know, I have not seen my urchins (both tuxedos) eat the chaeto but I really don't know if any will or will not eat it.

as of today, the ball of chaeto is pretty much gone. the urchin is packing a few small pieces around with him but yeah, i can't believe he ate the whole thing! LOL

Is there a downfall to having an urchin. They sound like they do a great job at cleaning algae so I was thinking about getting one

the only downfall i've had with mine is that he ate all the chaeto. i fixed my fuge light and am getting more so he's foiled in that department!

I had a white ribbon eel once in a tank with a pencil urchin. Bad idea. I woke up one morning and saw that the urchin had a strangle hold on the eel by the neck with its pencil arms. Think chopsticks. I was able to get the eel loose and he had a bruise for a while but was ok, tough little guy.

I had a hitchhiker short spine black urchin. It was about the size of a pencil eraser when I first saw him. I thought it was cool so I left him in there for a while. It grew very fast. It ate all the coralline algae on the rocks and then started knocking rocks over etc. I got rid of him about 5 months after I first saw him, he was bout the size of a tennis ball at that point. Never again.

I was thinking tuxedo because they stay relatively small...but I'm curious how strong are urchins?? I have quite a bit of rockwork and I think it's pretty sturdy in place but my eels are still quite young. How do they urchins really knock this stuff over?
