Using Tap Water in LA with Video!

The nems were beautiful but I would never use tap water in my tank. Yes it could be done but dealing with algae and contaminants is something most of us would rather not deal with.

I also noticed he added his salt first then the water, I learned my lesson about doing this a while ago, you get a lot of precipitation in the water and it gets very cloudy. Way better to add salt to water.

seems like there are a lot of things that he does that are questionable...like adding water to salt, keeping the tank at 1.0225, putting recently dechlorinated water in the tank(all the product i have seen say to let the water sit after treating for quite a while), in addition to the tap water. cool tank though, can't argue with results i suppose, just might not be the safest way to do things, and i am not sure that some of the less nutrient tolerant organisms like sps would do so well, but it looks good.

I hounestly don't know why people diss tap water so much. In some cases its a big no no depending on the quality but i have seen hundreds of beautiful reefs run with tap water and i use it myself. I really depends on the sources of the water but for the most part its it's working for him, me, and lots of others.

I watched this also even tho I like the video series all through this 3 part show I was wondering if this guy had been licking some sea slugs if you know what I mean ::shurg::

TDS of water at my place is over 300 most days. Nitrates, phosphates, copper, chloramine, etc. all at safe levels for people, but not for reef tanks. IMO, too many basic mistakes to assign any credability to the videos. Nice lights though. Could they be using them for other purposes?

For exampl, I have tried adding water to salt. It caused a lot of precipitation. Maybe Oceanic salt is somehow different.

the easiest way to get nems to split is to stress them
wonder why they are so many splits
i use lights off for a few days and then big water change
never thought of using poor water

I always watch Jim's videos, however, this one I didn't like. The guy used tap water, then didn't want to bother checking the new saltwater salainity, nor did he answer the questions that Jim asked about the parameters of the tank.

I'm not sure what Canada tap is at, but he said L.A., where TDS is about 500 on the average, 530 at my place.
That begs for nuissance algae.
Plus adding water to the salt is a fairly big no no, molecules bond different than what we want, changes chems/params from optimum.

That guy gives maintenance people a bad name...

That is not how you should ever take care of a reef tank... There are just so many variables that could go wrong its not worth the risk. Imagine if the city just treated the pipes with a new chemical that could leave a residue and it leaches into that tank and destroys everything. He saves himself the hassle of having to lift up 10 jugs of water and a little cash by using the tap... In turn though puts the system at risk every water change.

The salt mixing did not bother me that much, the way he mixed it is fine. The not having to test the salinity didn't bother me because he is right it does become second nature over time.

I've only seen a few videos of his about a year ago. This guy is a competing business and as they can be friends, business is business and can be the whole point of the video.

I like how he thinks by keep the salinity .003 from what is considered prime that he is fighting disease...

As was pointed out, the best way to get a bubble tip anemone to split is to stress it. No doubt this tank is stressed. I like how Jim didn't tell the guy he was a tool but instead let him talk and show that we was. No way would I let this guy any where near my tank. This guy reminds me of a Beavis and Butthead episode...uhh....uhh...uhh..words...uhh...huhh, yeah. I feel sorry for the owner of the tank but if he is happy with it then I suppose there is no harm. What is being done wouldn't fly for an stoney tank, but most of what is in the tank does better with dirtier water. I wouldn't call it a healthy tank or a thriving one.

If LA's tap water has a tds of 500 then why didn’t he have any algae growth on his rocks and equipment? I understand where you are all coming from but I would be more worried about the heavy metals from the tap water then the nutrients. I purposely have to feed corals frenzy to the tank water daily with amino acids to keep my nutrients up because i use tap water and find my nutrients are too low. 0 for nitrates and phosphates and sometimes it can cause certain acro’s to go pale. However, he does a 50g water change a week and that tank has been running for a while so if something bad were going to happen with the use of tap water it would have by now.

did they show all the filtration? I bet that tank goes through carbon like proverbial water, plus who knows what else..............

I won't use tap water, ever, because it simply eliminates a lot of stuff that could cause algae and other issues.

What is most shocking to me is the owner has all LED lighting, yet he/she is too cheap to use an RO/DI unit? WOW!

FWIW, I do have a lot of respect for Jim. I am unfamiliar with this other guy though.
