Using wrong recipe for cooking rock?

I had a bryopsis outbreak on my LR so I decided to "cook" it. About 2 months have passed and surprisingly most of the algae hasn't died off. What could I be doing wrong? The rock container is sitting in a dark place and I have performed 5 100% water changes since I began. I also have a powerhead in there mixing the water around.

do you have a heater in there? elevated heat levels help the die off. and make sure it is absolutely dark in there as well.

dark area = corner.

you need pitch black.

it wouldnt be such a nuisance if it required anything short of completely inhabitable conditions to die.

also, are you scrubbing it before each water change? with a wire brush to get the dead stuff off and removed from the system. otherwise whatever dies will feed the rest. gotta get it out of the loop.
