Any one have any reviews on the following Sterilizers for use in my 135 FOWLR:

Aqua Ultraviolet Twist UV Unit with Wiper - White - 40W
Jebao STU Stainless Steel UVC Clarifier (75-watt)

AquaUV has been building quality UV sterilziers and UV bulbs for marine applications for decades. Their units, ballasts and bulbs are proven to last much longer than competitive units and they only build quality products. They are one of the leaders in the UV sterilization industry not just for marine applications but for many other industries as well. They have a very long and proven track record. The Jebao is not built for salt water (it's a pond sterilizer) nor does it use quality bulbs or ballasts. There is much more to a UV sterilizer bulb than just putting out UV light and that is an area that AquaUV excels at as they design their units from the bulb out. They are the standard that others try but fail to measure up to.

On the flip side, there is no engineering behind the Jebao unit let alone support or guidance. They don't make their own bulbs. They use a cheap poor quality bulb. Watt for watt the AquaUV will work better and last longer than the Jebao. Not only that, but if you have pre sales or post sales questions regarding the AquaUV unit, AquaUV is a phone call away and there is always somebody knowledgable and available to answer your questions. That latter can't be said about Jebao as the company provides no support whatsoever for any products they sell.

I have two of the jebao units. I've had the 75w for a year and a smaller unit for close to three years. I bought them for diminishing ich (I know it's anecdotal at best) and clearing up the water a bit. They definitely do clear up the water of green or cloudiness. Can't speak to fighting parasites, then again the best UV unit might not help that.

I was in college and on a budget so the jebao fit the bill. Do they work in a pinch? Absolutely. The fit and finish matches the price though. I wouldn't go as far as to say that they are unsuitable for a reef.

You could always try the jebao unit from Amazon. I got mine for under 100 bucks, and if you don't like it, return it. If you're just trying to clear up your water for a cheap price point then go with the jebao. If you want a quality piece of equipment that will last many years, Aqua UV fits the bill.

Some stainless steel (read: expensive type) is okay for long term use in saltwater and some is not. If any of the SS is exposed to saltwater, I wouldn't trust Jebao to use the expensive material. I bet they will corrode with long-term use.

If it's going to be a one-time or temporary use, the Jebao is probably fine. But otherwise, Aqua UV is one of the (if not the) industry leader for UV...
