anyone running them . on my reef tank i think they are not practical as they kill the good stuff but was wondering if they make more sense on a sh tank?

I choose not to use UV as not all pathogens go through it to be killed off.
For example, bacteria that is adhering to tank/rock/decor surfaces, and even the surfaces of heavier detritus that doesn't get swept up into the water column will not be killed off.

I have a couple of UV units in my closet...what rayjay sez...they don't do anything against benthic/demersal critters, and you water column is actually pretty void of pathogens.
