Vertex Skimmer club

I haven't been keeping up with the thread as much as I used to.. And I'm a bit lazy today :p

That being said, what upgrade pump fits best on the in100 and are the pumps plug and play or do you need to mod the body? sorry if this has been answered already.

After reading a little looks like I'll need a bb1000 or bb2000 for the IN100. As far as connecting it to the skimmer one should use 1" ABS plastic and not PVC, correct? Did you guys notice that the BB pump upgrade took up more space in the sump?

sorry im really not to familiar with pumps where should i get one of those pumps?

premiumaquatics.com has them (under octopus pumps), same with reefspecialty.com

Premiumaquatics.com is where I do 99% of my online business. They also now have the $175 and over free shipping on hardware :)

Wow this thread has been quiet..

I'm in the works of getting a new IN100 GEN2 body and then will add a BB2000 to it. My ceramic shaft lasted for about 11 months before it started to get shaved in the back. Currently I'm waiting on a new shaft from proline to hold me over with the vertex pump until I can buy just the body from someone without the pump, and then pickup the BB2000 as well.

Octopus' "Super Reef Octopus XP-2000 Cone Skimmer" uses the BB2000 and they claim to be pulling 50SCFH... I know the cone constuction may be a little more efficient than the vertex' tradition skimmer shape (some may disagree too) but I'm assuming I'll be getting close to if not 50SCFH as well in the vertex IN100 construction w/ BB2000 for around $300.

I agree.. very quiet.

IN-100, Gen2...

I finally bit the bullet and ordered the Eheim compact marine pump w/impeller.

Here is what I' ve found so far...

The Eheim body is much smaller than the Resun.. and the bottom of the pump has no lip..
so the bracket used with the Resun would not work.. and if it had.. there would have to be some padding underneath the Eheim to make it secure.

The venturi air inlet hose for the Eheim is 1/4" ID and the Resun is 3/8" ID.

Thought I could get barbed connector/adapter and connect it to the skimmer.. but...
if you remove the silencer tab from the Eheim air inlet tube... the bubble level becomes unusable. ?!?! can't figure that one out.. will keep trying. The manual, of course, gives no clues.

The male, threaded output of the Eheim will actually insert enough into the skimmer to allow testing. Have since replaced with a 1" female threaded to 1", slip, male on the Eheim output. Had to sand approx 1/16" from the 1", male, slip to get it to fit into the skimmer.

Just kept using the provided venturi/inlet tubing on the Eheim.

So far I found these things while testing the Eheim..

It is quiet... a WHOLE lot quieter than my Resun. even after I got the noise
level reduced on the Resun.

It is a variable output on the pump.. up to 735 gph or something like that.
Kept it a the max gph so far.

You have to be patient with the adjustments on the skimmer. it will build up a very fine suds head that will grow and grow. have to start low and slowly adjust over time.In fact I start at lowest and never adjust.. just let it build up.

I've got the bottom of the pump "propped" up for now.. until I figure a more permanent solution.

I've just now started watching the first "test" of skimmate.. I've finally stopped "fiddling" with it long enogh. Looks as though I'm going to get much more and thicker skimmate (the way I like it) than with the Resun. The bubbles seem to be finer/smaller.

I battling with micro-bubble problem in the tank right now.. waiting to see if it calms down.. This is the first time I've had a micro bubble problem. Guess I shouldn't have gotten lazy and decided not to install the baffles in the sump.. decided to count on ATO
only. May have to go back and install it. will see.

I would like to know how the BB pumps work.. are they just plug and play?

Anyone resolved a micro-bubble in the display problem before?

Anyway.. that's my 2 cents worth.. anyone else tried different pumps on the
IN/Gen2 series. I would like to hear about the experience and results.

I'm about done with this pump.......

about 3 weeks ago my skimmer was way too loud, took it apart to find white dusty water and the ceramic shaft shaved away on the back side of the assembly. Contacted PA (bought it from them) and they then spoke with proline and had a new shaft sent to me. Assembled it and it's making the noise again. Not as bad but I can tell it isn't good and I doubt it'll get better - so I took it apart and found more white dusty water though the shaft didn't seem to be shaved off anywhere..?

I'm trying to get an online retailer to sell me a gen2 body so I can attach a BB2000 to it. If no body bites I think I might just bite the bullet and get a Super Reef Octopus XP-2000 Cone Skimmer.

How much did you dial it back (if you did)?? Sorry if you said it on the video, I work in a loud office and couldn't hear it that well. I'm thinking about adding one to my gen1 IN100.. Great video :)

I didn't dial it back at all. I have the stock venturi on it, and have the air vent open all the way, as well as having the exit tube fully opened with as little back pressure as possible on it.

I run my skimmer in 11" of water which is super deep. If you run shallower, you will be even better off than me. I would have no reservations in using this pump on the 100.

As for the noise difference, you really need to be in a quiet environment to hear the difference in the video. I didn't want to bump up the level at all because I wanted the before/after to be as "true" as possible.

My skimmer section runs at 8"

Do you mean you wouldn't get it for the in100? I noticed there's two different types of hydrofoamer and I believe you said you have the 9410. I was thinking about the 9420. $213 though :hmm2:

No, not at all... I think the 9410.040 would be perfect for your skimmer body.

$160'ish shipped, but all good pumps are around that...

Ok one final question here ;)

Where did you get yours for 160ish shipped? I'm looking at Premiumaquatics and they have it for $173 without shipping.

They advertise it as really quiet, lets hope so!

Looking at picking up a alpha 170 cone. Anything I should know about this skimmer that isn't in the description? This will be going on a 120g.

Being new to this thread and having just bought a IN 250 that I found out was a version 1 and having the pump blow up after about 30 seconds! Seemed like not a good start, But the pump has been replaced by a version 2, 55 Watt and I did the silencer upgrade myself and this Skimmer is now dead silent and after only 4 days of running (Not even broke in yet) It Is pulling some real nasty gunk from my New 100gal total system. I just don't see all these problems I read about on a majority of this thread. I have an Super octo XP 5000 on another system 300 gal and this Vertex I think Is going to be a great skimmer for the price. The only Issue I may have Is with the rating as far as anything else goes I think It Is pretty good for the price! Just my 2 cents

Not sure what type of pump you have on the IN 250, but the ones on the 80/100 are notoriously noisy. Granted, different people have different tolerance levels for noise, but a lot of people find that particular motor noisy.

Overall, I like the vertex. I find it a good build and a good skimmer for the money. With the added $160 of a good pump, that puts it at the price I would have paid for an i-Tech or whatever other high-end skimmer that is on the market.

So I've been following this thread from the very beginning with mojo doing the first review. Well after reading through about 25 pages or so i could not read anymore!! I am in the market for a new skimmer and have been doing a lot of research on the vertex in-100. I plan on setting this up for my 40G with a fuge. I plan to upgrade to a 60G later that's why im considering the in-100 over the in-80. I know some of you have been having problems with the stock pump. Did you guys just replace the stock pump? How is the skimmer performing for some of you guys that has had it running for a year or so now? I'm very interested in this skimmer as my aqua-c remora is just a piece of junk and not skimming bleeping bleep now.
