Very Ot: Bird Flu

Has anyone been watching the news stuff and hearing about the whole Bird flu scare? I just read a big tread on it in the lounge.

Thats what I get for being bored while Cody builds my lid for the pod.

Anyway, it's really starting to freak me out. I have two little boys and this is some scary stuff.

IMO: There are way to many people on this planet. We could use a little bird flu to thin us out. Afterall humans are the most dangerous, desructive force the earth has ever seen. A little pandemic might take us down a peg or two.

I agree about humans being destructive. That being said, if bird flu became a pandemic, I hardly think it would choose to only take out the "most dangerous and most destructive" among us. It would be a very indescriminant killer. Most likely affecting the youngest and oldest among us. But in 1918, it really liked to kill people between 20-40, that hits close to home.

I can safely say that after having a child that was born very early, there is only so much you can do to protect oneself or ones child/children. Trying to keep colds, flus, and anyother sickness out of the house has been impossible. Working at a job where I come into contact with people traveling to and from all over the world on a daily basis, keeps me on my toes as well. Not to different from living in a large city such as jacksonville. Most likely, larger cities with airports would be hit first and hardest. Then would come the smaller cities that have rail and interstate access. Oh yeah, forgot about wild birds and their migratory routes. How long would it take untill the "bird flu" came knocking on your door.

No I don't think I want to see it become a pandemic. We already have one of those, AIDS. That is scary enough, don't wish for something else that could kill many more, faster, without any obvious and effective prevention measures (culling chickens will only work for so long).

It's already jumped onto some mammals. Personally, I think it still needs fluid to be transferred. All the cases of it being transferred has some form of liquid involved. It's once this virus mutates and becomes airborne, that's when the pandemic will start. Sounds like the movie Outbreak huh....

"Most likely affecting the youngest and oldest among us"

Actually,
from what I read, it kills people between 20-40 years old because they have the strongest immune system. It's not the virus that kills you, it's your body attacking it.

Time to start those unhealthy habits again and partying, lol.

IMO: The human race is very much like a virus. What other life form on earth reproduces uncontrollable and destroys every area they inhabit? We are exactly like a virus exhausting all resources of our host until its eventual death. I can not think of any other organism other than a virus that uses this strategy so efficiently. Humans need something to control the population or eventually we are all done for. We only have one mother, how much do you think she is willing to take before she puts us in our place?

She'll just reboot the simulation again.

Referring to the 1918 influenza pandemic.

This one is a fun subject :) You really got to love a good debate

I am all for the human race, but don't you think our population is pushing it? How can we continue to grow at this rate? I mean 6 billion, where does it end?

The earth has everything it needs except plastic. Thats why humans were created. Once the earth has all the plastic it wants, humans will become extinct - George Carlin

I dont think I can post my response without either starting a debate or offending anyone, so Im not going to comment further on the subject, except to say, that BESIDES the deaths, IF this is really an issue, we will all be effected by this. Think of the effect on the encomy alone.

Parasite does the same thing, exhuast all supplies.

In a couple more million years, whatever life form takes over at that time, will find all the plastic that we made, but it'll be in a different form, like another type of diamond, and it'll be worth hundreds, thousands, or whatever numeric system they use by that time. Eventually, something will wipe us out like the dinosaurs. It's funny, I recall watching a show on the discovery channel on what will be living on earth serveral million years from now, and they don't mention humans. If anything, they claim the only remaining primate on earth, will be farmed by spiders as food for their queeen. Of course, this was only a show based off scientific speculation.

Well of course we are going to live on mars when the population gets out of hand. I mean come on everyone knows that

and only then will LFS be free of RC rules

Call me crazy on this one, but I think the moment we're capable of space colonization, that's when the aliens will show up and stop us. Stop this plague from spreading throughout the universe. That's why they're watching.:eek1:

I've got my bag packed.

I have just read a nice summary article on bird flu today. On the one hand, it said the H5N1 strain (bird flu) is two mutations away from being able to efficiently spread through the human population. As for becoming a pandemic, there is evidence it has been in poultry for nine years now, so if it was going to be the next big disease, it should have done so already. Hopefully that is true, since there are already strains of bird flu resistant to flu medications. Take what you read in the news with a grain of salt.
