They don't, T5's blow VHO T12's out of the water watt per watt. That is assuming you're using good ballasts, reflectors, and bulbs in both applications.

we have a standard 55 gallon tank. we want some coral but not sure exactly what kinds yet. What would be a good t5 set up?

You kinda need to figure out what type of coral you want... Also, how much you're willing to spend is helpful as well.

I had 4x110 vhos on icecap ballasts on my 90g. I had great growth, low heat, energy use etc. Just switched to ATi powermodule 6 bulb t5...lower energy, cooler, and brighter. I especially love the POP of the colors and bulb selection. VHO's are great, and more efficient than MH for many applications, but for a 55 a 4 or even 6 bulb t5 would be excellent.
