Viable alternative to Otohime

Otohime seems to be what most folks are weaning their fish with. I have only been able to find it in large amounts 1 or 2 kg and it is about $50. I have found another food that looks similar to Otohime, in fact, it looks like it has a bit more protein. Its called GP Diets and Brine shrimp direct carries it. Anyone ever tried the stuff? They have different sizes like Otohime as well. http://www.brineshrimpdirect.com/c1/c11/GP-100-200-Micron-Larval-Diet-c30.html

Yes I did look at Reeds the only problem is that reeds packages it as a sampler kit of several different sizes and unfortunately that brings it back to the $50 point. At this point I have a spawning pair of clowns, and pretty much all the equipment I need to "attempt" to raise the fry. Instant Algae would be $68 for a quart (no smaller size offered). Rotifers are $40 for a starter culture. From what I can tell there is no will-call, so overnight shipping with cold-packs would not be cheap. Add to that the fact that I am the just about the very last person on my mailman's route. Sometimes the mail shows up at 5 pm so I am not even sure if cold packs would cut it with temps over 100 here in the valley. So I am looking at $200 just for starters. If I am successful I could justify spending that kind of money, if not it would be an expensive experimental venture

I have to recommend Reed's rotifers. Instant algae is worth the cash but you could get some nannochloropsis and F/2 on ebay to raise your own phytoplankton to feed the rotifiers. Otohime is a really good feed, it can eliminate the need for baby brine shrimp. You could probably buy the C1 and use a mortar and pestle to make it smaller for the early larvae. If you didn't need all the Otohime I'm willing to bet that some people here would buy some from you. I bought some from another breeder for example.
Good luck

Instant Algae is the way to go. No maintenance or crashes to deal with. Yes, it is expensive but well worth what you save in time and worry. I use the Nanno 3600 which can be frozen until you need it. I've only used Otohime and have great results. Try the sampler pack for $50 and see what you think. Unfortunately, Otohime A cannot be bought in a small quantity except for the sampler pack but it will last you a long time.

Be sure to get your rotifers going strong before you try and raise the fry. That will save you some money by not having to buy emergency rotifers. Good luck!

"You could probably buy the C1 and use a mortar and pestle to make it smaller for the early larvae"

Not a good idea. I've tried. It goes dusty (much smaller than A) and fouls the water. As mentioned its not the same composition either. (that I did not know)

If you have a local reef club you should be able to get some Rotifers from them. Instant Algae or Rotifer Diet are both awesome and I will never culture phyto again.

buy it in bulk and sell it in smaller portions. i've seen other people doing that on other forums, and i've bought food from them.
