violet led question...please help

What would be a better purple/violet 3w led to get? 418-420nm or 400-410nm? I currently have 24 royal blues 445-455nm and 12 7000k whites.

I think the general attitude is that the uv leds are useless.. Even at 3w ea, they are said to be barely visible. I dont think they will give you the "purple" look youre looking for.

Although most people add violet for looks, some add violet to establish a full spectrum, if you look at the wave lengths of blue or royal blue LEDs, the blue doesnt even touch the violet spectrum, and the royal blue barely scrapes the surface.
If I was you I would go with the 418-420, I was lead to believe that led's closer to 400 are close to being considered UV light, check out this chart of the suns color spectrum:

The 400nm one will be solid violet, and peaks into UV spectrum, I'm not about to put UV lighting into my aquariums, after years of being forwarned to not use a DE MH bulb w/o the UV ray blocking glass, obivously youre NOT supposed to have UV rays in your tank, but, the 418-420 LED has the perfect amount of violet, IMHO

Thanks kakalakasha. And the 420 would be kind of around the same color temp as a 20k too if I'm correct...just a direct spectrum though. I belive I've settled on my whole setup consisting of 24 royal blues(445-455nm), 12 7000k whites(peaks around 450nm and also has about a 50% curve between 515-615nm), 6-8 violets(418-420nm), 2 deep greens(510-520nm), and 2-4 reds(660nm). That should about cover the spectrum that I need right? And add some really nice visual color...

or instead of 4 660nm red do 2 660 reds and 2 pink leds(peak at 450nm and have about a 75% curve between 575-625nm)

You don't want "uv" LEDs though. You want true violet. Anything in the uv spectrum below 400nm can be dangerous...

I wouldnt do any reds, haven't really read anything GOOD about them, other then people that like a weird bright red to their tank.
But, I've read lots of good thinkgs about going with warm white LEDs that drop into the red spectrum, like a 4500k. I would do 4 pinks and swap some of your 7000k whites for some 4500k warm whites, personally.
And yeah, True Violets are the way to go, not UV.

If you're interested, I've done a lot of reading on LEDs and they say in addition to green LEDs, cyan LEDs can cover a spectrum that most LEDs miss.
Here's a link to the one I may get:
http://www.luxeonstar.com/Cyan-505nm-20mm-Star-LED-122-lm-p/mr-e0070-20s.htm?CartID=1

And also, royal blues cover the dark blue-violet spectrum, in addition, I added plain old Blue LEDs to my order, they cover the midpoint between the cyan and the royal blue.

Link for the Blue LEDs i'm going to get (same as the website for the Cyans)
http://www.luxeonstar.com/Blue-470nm-20mm-Star-LED-70-lm-p/mr-b0040-20s.htm?CartID=3

And last, the greens I'm getting, also from the same site as the cyans/blues:
http://www.luxeonstar.com/Green-530nm-20mm-Star-LED-139-lm-p/mr-m0080-20s.htm?CartID=2

This way I'll only be placing orders to Aquastyle and Luxeonstar.

I set up a little chart of my own, and here's my LEDs in order of the spectrum I posted earlier.

True Violet (420nm), Royal Blue (455nm), Blue (470nm), Cyan (505nm), Green (530nm), Pink (590nm), and then obviously Cool Whites (10000k), Neutral Whites (6500k), and Warm Whites (4500k)

As you can see, without the regular blue LEDs (not to be confused with royal blues), there's a big gap of 50nm between the royals and the cyan, from 455nm to 505nm.
Same goes with the cyan led, without it, there would be a 60nm gap between the blue and green LEDs.

Hope this helps,
Zack

i've been really looking for some violets i already have some deep reds but I might throw some pinks in too . I really plan on adding some violet cyan and red..
my plan on the red's is turning them down till they're barely visable with no optics...
and as far as the warm whites go I have a few in my tank VERY yellow but its a great addition..
I'm using royal blue, cool blue, nuetral white, cool white, and warm whites as of right now.
84 total led's 7 warm whites 7 cool whites 28 nuetral whites 14 cool whites 28 royal blues
