Visiting the Keys

Thanks for your time!

I'm considering bringing my family of 5 down to the keys for spring break - 3/26 through 4/2.

I've never been to the keys.

Is it a good family vacation spot? - we have 3 daughters(9,12 & 14).

Is one key better than another?

Any recommendations on where to stay? Looking for clean safe accommodations - doesn't have to be fancy.

Thanks again.
Brian

I'm down in the keys very often. It's nice to see best place to stay is Miramar just because it's an hour drive from the end point of the keys and the starting point of the keys. The kids might find it a little boring unless they enjoy the water. Because you have water everywhere . Everything down here involves water so teach them to swim before you come and they will have a blast. There is lots of activitys to do and that week will pass by very fast and very relaxing. If you can anymore questions just quote me so I know you replied.

Key West would be the one to go to if you haven't been at all. Not that much beach in most of the keys though, very rocky. Key West is nice b/c you can rent bikes, scooters, walk pretty much everywhere. Great food and some attractions to see and take pictures at.

Beaches in the keys suck. Well, maybe that's harsh but they are different than what you find along the coast. Most of the beaches are flanked be shallow flats so there are lots of rocks and seaweed and no waves. You are surrounded by water everywhere though. Key west has a couple of OK beaches but you go to key west for history, sight seeing, culture and fun.

Beaches aren't every where?

No, Keys aren't really about beaches at all. If you want beaches go to Naples or Sanibel, or Daytona or FTL or a lot of other places. Keys is a different type of place. A place where a lot of the locals live off fishing and stuff, different type of laid back lifestyle, like eating good seafood & drinking lol.

Theater of the sea is a good family spot. It's a small outdoor seaquarium with dolphins sea lions and other sea life. Has it's own beach with payed admission. Took my 1 and 4 year old there.

if I can plan my day for you go to theater of the sea and afterwards for dinner go to Bass Pro Shop at Island MOrada eat dinner and enjoy that awesome sunset

In the keys, You can work your way south or head south and work your way as you are leaving.

I would split it in between Lower Keys and somewhat Middle Keys. Hawks Cay is very pricey and not for everyone. The time frame you pick it starts getting more pricey plus availability might be an issues...but might work if you split it half here and half in the keys. Plenty of things for the kids and the adults, head to their website. 3night stay might work for you here.

In the keys, check any of the major hotels, expect to pay $200 plus and up.

I will give you random things off the top of my head that many might not know.

islamorada bakery- nice little place for bfast and if you have a sweet tooth. I always grab a Key Lime pie before heading home as they make their treats there.

Head to Robbies to eat lunch there. If you skip lunch at least let the kids feed the tarpons there. How low will you go down with the bait to feed the poons?

Take a dip at Ann'e Beach--

Stop the car at one of the fishing bridge and take a walk- Long Key is a nice bridge- Its almost 3mile if you want to walk the whole bridge- well 6 if you walk back lol.

Hog fish- a must for fresh sea food- please try the hog fish. After a trip on the Yankee Capt. since their docks is right there- we bring our fresh catch so they can cook it up for us....but the hog fish sandwich is a treat.

We all heard of swimming with dolphins...but how about a cobia?.... Well, sort of- A cobia looks like a shark/cat fish in the wild they fight nice and when you put them in the boat they love to dance. They taste great as well....You can feed them and also jump in the water with them. I havent been to their new location but believe its on MM 69 on the bayside.

Head to No name key bridge- as you are driving there- drive slow....Look around and you might be able to see a Key deer. Stop the car and get out- many of the deer will walk up to you or you can walk up to them. Dont feed them :p

Dry Tortugas love fishing there. You can head there by plane or boat to fort. Jefferson. The ferry to the fort is nice- but looking at over $1000.00 for your family to get there.

Plenty of other stuff to do and more good place to eat but this is more than what i wanted to write. Good luck!

If you are down that many days I would say that you should visit all the main keys. It's definitely a great vacation time for the family (including all ages you mentioned) so long as they like water and marine life like oscarreef mentioned).

I go down to Key Largo so that's the one I know best so I'll start there:

Key Largo:
- Best snorkeling/diving in keys (Rainbow Reef probably the best outfitter imo). John Pennekamp state park is one of the largest protected reef areas in the world and has really improved drastically over the last few years with all of the conservation efforts.

- Restaurants: The Fish House, Hobos Cafe, Sundowners on the Bay

- Best Hotel: Marriott Key Largo (has a Jimmy Johnson's Big Chill which is pretty good also)

- Swim with Dolphins: I highly recommend this. The girls (and you) will love it. It's one of the best experiences anyone can have. If you do it, this is the place. Don't do it at Theater of the Sea (it's a major tourist trap). Theatre of the Sea is fun for the shows, but not a good Swim with Dolphins place. And well, it's an aquarium which I'm kind of down on now with all the stuff out there about how crappy they are. Go to Dolphins Plus in Key Largo. They are a research centered Swim with Dolphins facility. Dolphins get let out into the wild everyday.

Islamorada:
- Probably the best fishing in the keys. So if you're going to charter a boat do it out of here. While I am not sure the girls would enjoy deep sea fishing (easy to get sea sick), there is phenomenal back country/flats fishing. That said, if you can do both, do it. Those river fish you catch in WI; we use those as bait! ;)
- Restaurants: Green Turtle Inn (Don't miss it!!), Key's Fisheries (especially if Stone Crabs are still in season)
- Hotels: No clue.

Bahia Honda State Park
- someone mentioned this and it is for sure the best (and really only) beach in the keys. You can camp here, but there aren't really any hotels per se. This is a day-trip thing and I would stop here on the way down to key west. It's also one of the most picturesque places in all the keys.

Key West
- Definitely the most touristy of all the keys. But absolutely worth going.
- Very walkable, great food, great key lime pie
- If you can pull off a day trip to the Dry Tortugas, do it.
- Also a great place to rent a boat and try some watersports if you never have.
- Otherwise, just walking around Key West is a great experience. And you'll be able to snap the obligatory photo of the family at the Southernmost point in the USA (90 miles from Cuba). Also, great museums. The Butterfly Garden is impressive and if you like Hemmingway and history, there's the Hemmingway house.

-Restaurants: If you want to give Cuban food a shot, do it at El Siboney.
Off the beaten path, but another can't miss spot is Hogfish Grill. There's dozens of other amazing places. Hard to go wrong in Key West.

Hotels: Pier House and Southernmost Hotels. Stayed at both within the last year. Can't go wrong at either.

As for scheduling and days needed at each key, they are all very small so it more so depends on what kinds of activities you want to do in each key.

Good Luck and hope this helps!!

LOL. So you want to open a travel agency with me? Haha. I guess we were working on the same report at the same time.

Great suggestions. Can't believe I forgot Robbie's! It's great.

Also, Mile Marker 88. Another great spot.

Man, I love the keys!

Don't forget about the Aquarium in KW. It's inexpensive and kinda small but cool. At sunset in KW most people head to Mallory Square for street performers and to just watch the sunset. Also hit the Kino Sandal factory right by the aquarium. Your wife will love them and I have even bought some for myself. If you are looking to charter a boat the Cowboy is one we have used several times. They have a slip at the Garrison Bight marina. KW in my mind is not really kid friendly. I mean there are a few things for them, but in a week I think they might get bored. Just my 2cents

A lot of good recommendations and some ehh. I would avoid Anne's beach , sorry but it'll probably ruin the keys for you if you think of sandy beaches lol. Bahia Honda is the best beach (for keys standards) with great snorkeling right off the beach.

As for key west it's a nice spot to go for a couple days at max, I see it as more of an adult destination unless you do things on the water. If you plan on hitting bars, clubs and other nightlife/ festivals then it's a great. Don't get me wrong you can do things with your family during the day but I have always seen it as a party atmosphere and even during the day you'll get that feeling when walking around. A must is what Weiser said, watch the sunset at sunset pier with a tasty dinner.

Honestly to really answer your questions you need to tell us what your budget will be like. If you have no budget then no problem lol. And if you are planning to come down during spring break you better start booking hotels ASAP unless you want a 2 star hotel at $200+ per night. Last minute bookings don't really exist down here. I've had friends sleep in their car because they couldn't find a room. And prices could easily reach $500/night.
A great idea if you can would be to rent a house on VRBO.com , it'll give you the keys feel.

For now i'll mention some cheap things,
Upper Keys: Snorkeling trips in key largo $30-$40 Keysdiver.com, John Pennekamp like others mentioned, Florida Keys Wild bird center (free), Glass bottom boat (most keys have them, always a good alternative if you can't snorkel),

Middle keys: Turtle hospital, Florida Keys Aquarium Encounter, Sombrero Beach, like Rarewon said before Robbies and if you don't eat there just go to feed the tarpon it's a unique experience.

Key West: Butterfly and Nature Conservatory (#1 on trip advisor), Ernest Hemingway's house, Southernmost point, Duval, Mallory square,

Ballyhoos Restaurant in Key Largo.

+1 for Bahia Honda, both sides just watch the tide near the bridge.

Sombrero Beach in Marathon is nice.

The Stoned Crab in Key West if stone crab is still in season.

+1 for John Pennekamp park.

Mile marker 79. Restaurant is Lazy Days, and in my opinion, the best meal you will have in the keys.

We often make the drive for lunch on Sunday's after church. Try the coconut shrimp, mozzarella sticks, lion fish of hogfish baskets and the Long Island iced tea.

Nothing better!

No wonder you like it so much, those "teas" make everything better, LOL!:bounce2::eek1::wildone::D
