Vodka in Tanks < 100g?

I'm wondering if anyone is dosing vodka in any tanks that are less than 100g? I am thinking about doing it in a 40gallon. i change the water out 10% every week and can't seem to get nitrates down. they stay at 5-10ppm. heavy bioload in the tank. what do you guys think?

I've never heard of such a thing , but could you tell me more about it? My friend has a 125 and his nitrates are really high.

I dose vodka in my 40 gallon. I've been doing it for the past 2-3 months with pretty good success. Just for an FYI, my dosage amount is now 0.1 mL/day.

I dose in my 30G, also .1 mL a day. Definitely go really slow and underdose if anything. It's easily to burn tips (or worse) by overdoing it.

Sure, why not. I dose in a 75 gallon. Just start slow... then slowly move up until the nitrates disappear.

Ditto, I dose vodka in my 40 gallon and my dose was 0.2ml a day, but I've cut back to 0.2ml every other day, and my nitrates are still 0. Have you read the chemistry article "Vodka dosing distilled"? that's a good start, just go slow, underdose, and measure your nitrates along the way. I'm able to feed more now that I dose vodka, and my fish/corals love it!.

Edit: Do you have a skimmer for your 40g? A Skimmer is important for vodka dosing

It doesn't matter the size of the tank, if you have high nitrates and phosphates and can't get a grasp on them, then Vodka (carbon) dosing might be for you. If you haven't already read this article it explains it in great detail.

5-10 is not bad if you don't have algae probs IMO....I have dosed over 2 yrs in my 90 wiht 60 net gal. Sit down cause I dose 14.5 ml/day :)

14.5ml a day! wow! glad i was sitting down.
I was thinking about starting with MB7 and a couple of drops every day or every other day. I'll check out the article. sounds like a tumbs up from evryone. I was just kinda freaked out that i was going to overdose. I've dabbled w/ biopellets and overdosed. I wasn't feeding enough and starved my corals, But before the browning they where loving the 0 nitrates, so i wanted to give it another shot. I feel like i can control it more by dosing manually?

5-10ppm in my opinion isn't bad either but i barely feed. I don't really get it. If i treat my fish they start creeping to 15ppm+...

Thanks for the feedback

MrKite24, Are you using a mohr pipet for dosing? what was your starting dose? .2 ml/daily?

been on vodka (various carbon dosing) for over 5 years......last 3 years have been mostly vodka at 10 ml a day.....90 gallon.....

It doesnt matter what sized tank it is...as long as there is a decent skimmer on the tank, vodka dosing will work.

I have used vodka dosing in my 28G nanocube and it worked really well. I used it for the past few weeks in my current tank: 47G. But I had hit rock bottom with nitrates and so have stopped it.

It is a very efficient way of decreasing nitrates and phosphates. But remember that you will need some nitrates present to remove the phosphates.

Actually, I'm diabetic so I have a 0.5mL syringe I have dedicated for the tank. I used the reefkeepers magazine article to find my starting dose. http://reefkeeping.com/issues/2008-08/nftt/index.php I started with 0.16 and worked up until the nitrates were undetectable. After that I've settled on a 0.1 mL/day dose. You just have to be really careful. If you dose too much the corals will start to recede. If this happens you should stop dosing for a week or so then start again at half of what it was.
