So far I can say that the Alita 40 doesn't seem to be properly sized for this skimmer. Unless I bleed off a substantial amount of air, there are giant bubbles that make it out of the bubble plate. They are so large that the surface is radically turbulent. With bleeding off air, I can reduce the bubble size to being reasonable. While I won't know for sure until next week's results, I am guessing that the skimmer is just improperly equipped (whether it be the dart, or the neck size, or the height, etc. is beyond my knowled

Sounds like the same results I had. Want to add yours to the "junk" pile like mine?

Brad, dont forget you may have to slow the water going to the dart with the gate valve.

So far it seems like all the way open produces the most fine bubbles (based on looking in from the side of the box). When I close it up there are less and less bubbles, or at least that's what it looks like.

Brad

If you have a kill-a-watt then you simply start turning down the gate valve until you see a relatively large drop in the watts drawn.

Btw, adding more air will make the watts drop and less will make it pull more watts since it is pushing proportionally more water than air.

Anyway, I think it is just as easy to watch the outlet at the bottom of the box after closing down the valve then slowly open it until visually you see the bubbles quickly cloud the chamber.

This will help you get the most you can out of it.

One other idea: I have considered going back to the old simple air stone method. One guy on RC, I think his screen name is Jnarow or something like that made a diy air stone skimmer.

He seems to get great results. I just don't have the will power to change out air stones continually and it would take a bunch of them i think.

You can get 1/4" uni-seals and drill out the cone for the air-line tubing.

Just a low-tech alternative.

I'm still waiting on Hahnmeister to give more details on that laguna mod.

I didn't want to seem lazy but even after running through all those posts I couldn't find any real concrete forumla for custom volutes.

Without more info. I am not willing to buy a pump and then have to tinker for a month plus to get it working. I am just not that patient or talented.

I'd be more than happy to pay for information if need be. At this point it's only money right?

unless you had it in stocks today(-500 points or so) or in one of the thousand banks closing in the next few weeks

Daschrisma - your post is exactly what im my skimmer is performing like. Seems to work nice without a pump and with a pump is rediculous. I can get smelly skimmate out of it, but like you i need the water level to be very high in the neck.

I know fish can take a lot more than corals can, so i am not sure if the skimmer is doing its job effciently or not. I know its skimming, but could it be more?? Who knows...Its been the only one on my system. But I also know my system is young and my bioload might not be very high. I do have 30+ fish in the tank and just had a big diatom bloom...I changed out 100 gallons tonight and I will see what happens this week.

No joke

Tomorrow morning would probably be a good time to buy low or at least check out what Warren Buffet is going to do.

Just to keep this going on subject (wouldn't want the modzi's to get their hackles up):

I found out today that the sedra 9000 ho pumps are not available for individual purchase. You can only get them if you buy a WM skimmer.

Figures.

no prob about subject. i dont want this to stray too. i have be reading this forum for a wile now and seeing what people are learning from this and hope to learn more too.

Brad, did you leave the venturi on your skimmer? Mine does not have one. Someone else may want to chime in but I think it should come off with the use of the air pump.

I dont. I went with U.S. Bank... they have actually been making gains by a good bit this past year (more than any other) because they never did those high risk loans to begin with.

This is odd,

I just got an e-mail that christinaj just posted to this thread yet I do not see her post.

This has happened a few times now. Anyone have the same problem?

Dunno
When I checked there was no post by " Cristina_j " altho I had received a notice of posting on this thread.

I think it is time for the thread to get back on track about the skimmer and what folks using the Volcano think of its performance, as well as tips for improving its performance.

I'm still hoping that Hahnmeister will expand on the laguna mod idea. I think he knows as much about it as anyone.

I even said pretty please.

Im sorry, but I have been told by one of the mods that I am to: "Please refrain from participating in discussions that involve ATB skimmers or their competitors."

I dont get how I could be seen as 'commercial', but "Your affiliation/support/designs/ideas/testing, whatever you with to call it, with ATB is simply too close..." ...which I find odd since one would think I COULD be involved in the ATB forum then, not to mention, in the end, did Tom get two ATB's? I dont think so.

But anyways, while I work on getting this sorted out (I thought I had an agreement with Agu), I am not going to be helping anyone with skimmers it seems.

In the meantime, beware talking about a product you like too much... 'word of mouth' advertising is the new taboo (Energy, Grim Reefer, Deltec Rules, Volcano1, gcarrol, etc.).
