Vortec vs Jebao

Im trying to pick out powerheads for a new tank im building which is a 37 gallon. Im torn between two powerheads, either two jebao PP4's at around $100 or one Vortec MP10. I know the quality of the MP10 is better then the Jebao's, but is it really worth almost triple the price at $235? I want something that is going to last obviously. However i do not have the budget for a second MP10 at all, i barely have enough for a single MP10. I would like it to be able to create chaotic/random flow and waves in the tank. I heard that one MP10 would be enough for my tank as well. What do you think i should pick?

How about an AquaMedic Ecodrift? It is in the middle of cost, is more reliable than the jebao and is not from a patent-stealing Chinese copy company and you can support a solid company with EU and US ties that innovates and creates new products.

I think that one of anything of that size would be enough.

I have the Jebao you're looking at. It's been going for about a year with no problems. I also have the big one in my other tank. That one doesn't do wave mode anymore, but that may have been from some pesky chaeto. My only complaint is that you can definitely hear them. When you crank them up they get annoying with the constant wa...wa...wa...wa. They can put out power but the noise get increasingly worse to the point it limits how high you want it. Light sensor works fine as long as it is put facing your tank lights. I'm currently about to change to the mp-10w. The wireless control is something to consider. I would get the better mp-10w because you can always add a second later.

Unless i am entirely blind that is a jebao clone with a different housing. Sort of like the DC pumps....

Just putting their name on the plastic doesn't change the underlying hardware.

The quality difference is accurately reflected in the price on this one. But...as mentioned, two is better than one.

Agree that two will be better than one.

However, are you going to be able to commit to cleaning the Jebaos every month or so?
Also, more importantly, does the room that the aquarium is in have smoke detectors? :)

I have always expressed my warnings on going the cheap route when buying equipment. Been there, done that and equipment malfunctions and failures can make this hobby frustrating and not enjoyable like it should be.

Considering how much we invest in our livestock, I think important, life support equipment shouldn't be skimped on, esp if you travel a lot.

Warnings based on true facts is one thing..
You are just making crap up though.. or attempting to make a mountain out of a molehill..

All manufacturers have issues here and there.. They ALL do..
I can find posts about failures related to Tunze, GHL, Neptune, Ecotech and more... No one is immune.. stuff happens.. All "critical" support equipment..

I have 4 Jebao PP powerheads running right now.. They have been running non-stop for over 2 years solid.. I ONLY removed one from the tank to clean it the other day because a baby snail made its way into the impeller/cage area and wedged itself in there stopping the prop.. I picked it out and happily back into the tank it all went.. I was covered in coralline algae.. I could barely see the black plastic..

So please tell me how I'm able to get by without monthly cleaning if what you say is true?

Will you find posts about failures with Jebao products? Sure
Will you find many more people with success stores with them.. Sure will..

you are really helping fuel the rumor mill more than actually benefiting the community though with your blanket statements of false information and weak scare tactics..

jebaos. going on years with no issues... never cleaned. have 2 rw-8's and 4 pp-4's though out my system. they're strong and cheap, and quiet, however one of the 8's is louder than all others. The higher end premium brands are not without their own problems either.

I also ended picking up a JB Wave controller used here on the for sale section. it runs my two 8's and really is a cool little box. many more flow options than the stock controller, which already does more than enough. Good luck whichever way you go!

Sounds like I rustled your jimmies a little.

Just hoping I can keep that diarrhea from coming out of your otherwise knowledgeable mouth in the future.. ;)

There is enough BS/bad information out there.. no need to fuel it even more..

I have 2 RW-8's and & an older MP40 in my 90. The RW-8's are fine but have required new impellers a couple of times in the 3 or 4 years they've been running. Cleaning in vinegar once a quarter or so is also required on mine. I think that has something with dosing two-part. They do take up more space than my MP40. The MP40 however does seem to move more water and has a wider flow path. I run it at around 50% in my 90 most of the time. The RW-8's are quieter, but I have older MP40ES.

A single MP-10 might suffice for your 37 gallon. I hear the QD models are much quieter than the old models. I see MP10's available in the equipment for sale section here at RC regularly. Maybe a used model will work for you.

That comment I'll agree with. But beyond that, I'll agree with everything mcgyvr said. All your warnings here about Jebao is uninformed claptrap based on data from 4 or 5 years ago!:headwally:

I've been using Jebao wavemakers since they first came out. YES, absolutely the first generation of Jebao wavemakers were less well made than most people would want... but even then it wasn't as bad as you make sound now!

I had 3 early Jebao wavemaker failures over 2 years, and that's out of a dozen I bought (I have 4 tanks, 2 sumps and I bought a spare). That's not a good record. However, I still have some: 2 I use in my 65g shallow reef tank and I keep for other purposes (my refugium/sumps, QT tank, collection storage away from home, making new saltwater...)

Since then Jebao have done several new generations and like mcgyvr, I've got 4 Jebao mavemakers now running 9 months in new tanks and I've NEVER taken them out to be cleaned. I wish I could say that about my Maxspect Gyre which costs 2 or 3 times what a Jebao CrossFlow does!

Ouch!
Did you ever get Jebao to fix or replace them? My guess is you did not.

4-5 years old data? Ehh, more like 2-3 years.

Like I said, its a to each their own sorta deal, but you get what you pay for in this hobby, simple as that.
I have setup and maintained many reefs foir people and used Tunzes and vortechs on all of them, only failure I ever had was with my own 6101 seizing after a Kalk disaster, to which Rodger fixed promptly and also threw in a 24v fuse if I wanted increased performance in the future.

This topic is :deadhorse: , but my "claptrap" warnings on Jebaos are not without foundation.

Can i get one of these Jebao pumps for my 25gal AIO, is there a model for my size? I'd like to add one in addition to the little Hydor that i currently have.

looks like they do have something my size- wasn't sure since the usual online retailers i buy stuff from didn't have this brand of pumps. But this Saltwateraquarium.com has them! I also do usually stay away from chinese made goods, but if some of you guys have good experience with them, then why not?

Whether or not product is going to burn your house down, or break quickly is one thing.

What cannot be argued is supporting USA/Germany/Italy etc (depending on your brand of pump) and the engineers and economy and taxpayers there, while supporting a real company with a real dealer network and a real warranty and whether that is important to you or not. The alternative is a Chinese company that steals or copies other designs with no real distributors and no real warranty.
