Vortec vs Jebao

For a 37 gallon reef tank keeping LPS Dominant and some Softies, what GPH would you recommend? I have a choice right now between two 1050 Gph powerheads and two 660 GPH powerheads, the lower GPH's ones being cheaper.

I went 100% Jebao/Jecod because I make Henny Youngman look extravagant.
I currently run 2 DCT12000 returns, 2 RW-20, 1-RW15, 1 RW-8 and a CP-40.
I have a spare DCT12000 from a tank I just took down.
I've also tossed an RW-15 and RW-8 that died.
Some have been running almost 2 years and some less than a month.

The cost benefit ratio to me has been 100% positive.

Whether or not product is going to burn your house down, or break quickly is one thing.

What cannot be argued is supporting USA/Germany/Italy etc (depending on your brand of pump) and the engineers and economy and taxpayers there, while supporting a real company with a real dealer network and a real warranty and whether that is important to you or not. The alternative is a Chinese company that steals or copies other designs with no real distributors and no real warranty.

Agree that two will be better than one.

However, are you going to be able to commit to cleaning the Jebaos every month or so?
Also, more importantly, does the room that the aquarium is in have smoke detectors? :)

Here are two post within this thread mentioning fire with the Jebao pumps. Is this an issue?

+1 on that Mr. Potatohead. You absolutely get what you pay for in this world.

No its not an issue..

There are no fire issues nor required cleaning schedule greater than any other manufacturer..

Can't comment on fires but I could not disagree more on the cleaning. I personally own a jebao wp40, vortech mp40, and tunze 6105, all roughly the same stated gph range and the jebao (as well as a handful of other jebaos I own) slow to an absolute crawl and are borderline useless inside of 3 months without cleaning.

The tunze and vortech have no noticeable flow loss in the same time table. It's consistent across all powerheads I've owned from the 3 companies. Tunzes seem to hold their power the best actually. I can go 6-8 months and have them be absolute caked with coraline and algae nearly fully occluding the grates and they still have sand flying on the other end of the tank and are dead silent, at 60% power mind you.

In that same time frame every jebao I own will have stalled out entirely and won't even spin anymore. Not an isolated incident. I've owned 4 and they all have the same problem. Purchased far apart too. Not all from the same production run.

The power supply/control connection tends to short out and lose contact easily as well requiring wiggling of the cord and frequent unplugs and plugging back in.

They move water and are cheap. A great option for someone on a budget who doesn't mind frequent maintenance. But the motor quality isn't the same. You DO get what you pay for. A tunze doesn't cost more for the name. The motor is simply more powerful under resistance and of a higher quality.

I don't sell my jebaos. I keep them because it's always smart to have backups no matter what you do. They make great salt mixing pumps

Buy cheap = buy twice
Go with the MP

In my case, buy expensive and hate them :)

There is no doubt the vortech are a better made pump but i hate mine, they are the noisiest thing in the tank by a long shot and will be replaced asap (likely with gyres/cp40), i would have to agree with the cleaning as well, they very rarely need any maintenance.

Having said that i have used jebao return pumps and the RW range and for value for money there is no better IMO, they are quiet, great flow and the build quality is the same as many other US/Euro pumps.

Now if you want top notch warranty, first class build quality and reliability it has to be Tunze :)

Nuff said for me..
I agree with you absolutely with regards to a WP series product..
You have the first gen product.. They sucked and were inferior products.. I'll admit that all day long.... I would throw any WP series in the trash. Their first gen stuff was not something I would ever recommend...

I will not say the same about their RW or PP or SW series though..
They learned their lessons, corrected their mistakes and have greatly improved their products since then..

Thats why these "Jebao haters" are just silly IMO... and just years late to the Jebao bash party... I was there.. We bashed like crazy.. It was a wild..wild year.. But the party is over..

Any of us who have been around and actually used the product vs just read/rinsed and repeated the negative comments on the internet know that its a night and day difference..

Would one MP10 be fine for my tank? I have been told by a few people on here that one will do the trick. I know the thing can put out 1500 GPH no problem but wonder if it will have trouble creating randomized flow (corals swaying back and forth)

Do you need more wave action than this?

If you want to start using ReefCrest a lot you may want a second one if you get a bunch of SPS or something, but for soft corals and LPS there is no problem at all with one.

I didn't feel like I was bashing them either. Just gave an objective and measurable observation about my experience with them. To the rw and pp series motors really have that much more torque that over 6-8 months use they only lose about 10% pushing power?

Yeah kind looking at a mixed reef with Mainly LPS and some softs. I want a mode where it makes euphyllia slowy sway back and forth. Maybe short pulse mode/Reef Crest?

It's pretty easy to make Euphyllia sway, any of long pulse/short pulse/reef crest/lagoon would work fine. With one pump you don't need the wireless either unless you want to set up a program but then you also need Reeflink (unless you have Apex). Just keep it simple and buy a non-wireless one IMO and upgrade in a couple years to another one with wireless if you decide you need to.

What would your guys opinions be as far as going with either one MP10 and or Maxspect Gyre XF230. Been eyeing the gyre a while now and kinda like how the gyre makes a complete gyre in the tank so there are no deadspots and you dont really have to think about placement of the gyre/powerhead.
