vortech questions

After my extensive LED build I'm strapped on cash, but I need more flow in my tank.

Tank Specs: DSA Pro 70 36" x 18" x 24"

I'm trying to figure out if I go 2 MP10W es -or- 1 MP40W es

Thoughts???

I think two mp10's will give you more options. With a smaller tank like that, two would be awesome and give you great control. An mp40 would work also, just won't give you as many options, that's all. Either one will work, but if you can I think two mp10's would be better IMO.

mp10w or mp10?

What is the difference between these two, is there even a difference? I thought the only difference was if it was say an mp10 or mp10es which means the mp10es comes with a wireless controller. Not sure if the w indicates anything, I don't think it does.

The MP10W is wireless and communicates with the other MP10W (one master one slave)

the MP10es does not do this

the MP40 and 60 are only wireless models.

I will ask again. the MP10W es or the MP10 es

Oh, well thank you for clarifying that!

I'm sorry I didn't answer your question, my bad!

The mp10w will be better then, as long as there's not like a huge price difference or anything.

retail about 70.00 difference total. No need to say you are sorry. Just wanted you to be informed.

Well then it's up to you. For $70 more, it's your call. If you can, it would be less of a hassle, but you'd be fine with the mp10es. I'm assuming you would have to just program them separately on there own, that's all.

shoot sorry its getting late.

i would go with the wireless version personally as it gives a few more options.

If your strapped for cash the non wireless ones are just as good you just won't be able to sync them together.

FWIW I run all of my vortechs in independent lagoon 100%. They are all doing something different all the time. On occasion I like to link them and play with waves ect.

One thing to think about is the UP GRADE. If you go to a larger tank in the future the mp40 is the way to go. That's just the way I think though!

Very good point, but isn't there an upgrade from and mp10 to an mp40? This way he can still get the mp10's for now. Or am I thinking about the upgrades available for an mp20, hmm. Can't remember.

Seems like such a simple question yet Answers are far from complete. Allow me to fill in from what I know and experienced since I bought all the models.

MP10w is wireless. You can link them all and they will do different things.

MP10 ES eco smart without wireless

MP10w ES gives you the same as above but adds their 2 special functions for nutrient export. It does long or short pulses followed by something else I can't remmeber. The MP10w ES also gives you a new controller which in itself might be worth it.

MP40w and MP40w ES is same as mp10 as listed above but more powerful pumps. The problem with the MP40's is that they changed the bearing design so that instead of running the bearing all the way thru the shaft (ceramic shaft) and having the shaft supported in both ends like the MP10, they have the entire impellor assembly on a single flanged ceramic bearing. What makes it error prone and fails is that if the thing wears down even slightly due to calcium build up, it can quickly wear out plastic bushing surrounding the bearing, drag the magnetic in the housing, or even lock it up causing the impellor shaft to snap. Very easy to break.

The MP60w is basically a super sized MP10. None of the MP40 problems but with all the benefits of the MP10. MP10 is actually very reliable due to support on both sides and ceramic shaft instead of ceramic flanged bearing. They also improved the flow of the MP60 and also added cooling fins on the motors on the outside. MP60 is a vast improvement over all others. Runs cooler, puts out more water, and reliable. I replaced 2 MP40 with 2 MP60 .

If I were you get the MP10w ES. The wireless allows you to update firmware, bring all units to sleep mode with one controller, and also syncronized the pumps so they act as 1. In my opinion and in my tank , it creates better swells.

You can't update an MP10 but you can go from MP20 -> MP40. But why bother? You can get these used so cheap you may as well just get a used one and be done. MP20 is worthless.

From reviews I have read about the MP40 it is the one with the most problems. Do you have any insite on this?

The only reason you have heard more about mp40 pumps is because they were the original design. The wet sides of them have been through at least 3 changes as far as I know. Each version was better. There are far more mp40 pumps in use than any other of their models so naturally you will hear more complaints. They are great pumps.

MP20 is worthless.

I ran one on a frag tank for a long time. I would hardy call it worthless. My corals loved it.

When I broke that tank down I upgraded it to a mp40wes and added it as the 5th vortech for my 360.

There was no need for it when the mp10 came around. Just part of the evolution of vortechs. Can't wait to see what comes next.

Thank you.

Looks like 2 MP10W es for me

I also have to disagree w/ this.
I have a mp 40 and mp20, the 20 makes no sound at all and has ran flawlessly for about a year and a half now, and not a hint of heat on dry side.
My 40 gets a bit warm if I run max speed, and I do hear when it ramps up.

+1 2x MP10wES

My tank is 40" wide and I'm also using 2x MP10wES. Running them on anti-sync with Reef Crest mode is just awesome.
