Wait on Aqua Illumination Vega or get Ecotech Radion

Coopj. I have a radion over my 37 g sps and have been very happy with the results in both color and growth of the corals and the color of the light itself. You can check out my build thread if it helps http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/sh....php?t=2094467. I was looking for a nice plug and play unit with quality build and have not been disappointed.

tandldel, your tank looks great. Those sps seem happy under that Radion. Are they growing?

It doesn't need one. It comes with computer software and a USB port. Software controller built in.

Can it connect to a computer via wireless router etc. and how would the USB connect on the unit? I believe Vertex has a wireless USB stick (about 79 I think) that plugs into the back of the unit which communicates directly with the router.

Just went to Ecotech's site and realized that the unit has to be hard wired via USB connection to connect to a computer.

There are people that are running Radions wireless. Haven't looked at exactly how they do it, which I simply hook up my laptop to. Not a big deal for most people as your not going to sit there everyday and tinker with lighting colors, lighting schedule etc.

Thanks, yes they are doing great. I think your tank would do great with 2 over top. The dimensions would work well and you will have no problem with growing sps throughout at all depths. Like anything else certain Sps do better at different depths but I have had no issues as far as growth or color with the radion. Also I used the premium hanging kit and if you are going to hang the lights they would look great over a rimless like yours. Very minimal footprint and very slick looking. As anything with this hobby there are many options and preferences out there but rest assured if you go this route the light does perform as promised.

My own 2 cents wrt Radion vs AI is that they are both really good and well made products but it really comes down to an optics and spectrum debate. If you want no optics and more colors to play with the Radion is the way to go if you want optics and are happy with blue and white go with the AI. Optics IMHO are double-edged sword. They focus the light much more tightly but they will complicate your livestock placement because they can give a much harsher gradient between light and dark. The upside is they can project the light far better into a deeper tank. The colors on the other hand are a personal preference so that's pretty much up to you. I know from experience that when I had all Reef-Brites in blue and white, which I loved btw, I did miss some colors in my corals. I always felt my oranges never really looked right. With the radions the oranges look like they are supposed to in my mind but YMMV.

Just wait for Vega.. You don't know exactly what they have in store for ya. The concept model at the show may not be the final production unit. I am starting to believe that companies that have done one thing for years may have something going on for them. Just wait a bit... Wish I did...

Ecotech is a GREAT marketing company and nothing more.

Thats a ridiculous statement. I could not disagree with you more.

To the OP. If you like the radions get them. They are stellar led fixtures. There isn't really a reason to wait if your needing them now.

I just went with the Pac Sun Metis Hyperions for my 200gal tank. I love the connectivity and the 8 separate LED color channels. I can dial it in to my exact specifications.

+1 on the Hyperion. I have the 49" three-panel fixture over my 135g. It does have three power cords, though. Mine is in a canopy so it isn't an issue for me.

I went to look at a Radion and AI sol side by side yesterday, the AI is very white in comparison to the Radion, and I would say (judged by eye but without any kind of measurement !!) that the spread is better on the Radion

I also called AI today about the Vega. They will ship with different white LEDS to the Sol, and with 70 degree optics, but still no clue as to when...

This really deserves a whole other thread but I will say this anyways.

Ecotech has good products, they really do. But to convince people that they need a $700 pump to move water to be successful takes some GREAT marketing. I haven't spent near the money with Ecotech as you have and I certainly am not part of their fanboy club any longer. I was at one point but then I spent 1/10th to get me a Tunze 6015 and remembered how nice this hobby can be.

Sure the Tunze can't be controlled like the Vortech but that doesn't bother me. I can hide it behind the rocks, point it where I want and not listen to a motor on the outside of my tank. The other great thing about the Tunze is that it doesn't block ANY of my viewing like a Vortech motor does.

My new tank will have the Vortech on the back wall, where it should be. I will have 3 sides to look at my tank from all angles and not have a motor in the way.

I love my Vortech. I am going on 2 years without a single issue from mine but I can have just as much success with a cheaper alternative IMO. Why do we buy the more expensive stuff? Because a marketer made us believe we NEED that specific item. It happens in all aspects of life.

No doubt they have a good marketing strategy but your first statement and your follow up do not contain the same messages. Users experience and recommendations have done far more marketing for them then any pay for advertising. There is no better marketing then a happy customer.

I know the only reason I got hooked was because hydor couldn't make a power head that didn't shock you and I went on a mission to remove power cords from my tank. After I got my hands on the first vortech there was no turning around for me. I am addicted to the flow they provide and the lack of cords in the display.

As far as the Radion is concerned I have seen some awesome setups that run them and they are nothing short of spectacular.

Yeah I got rid of my Koralias a while back as well.

I like the Radion. It is a great LED fixture but I still see some shortcomings that are EASILY fixed if Ecotech would do so. Then again the shortcomings may just be me and people don't care. I personally find it a huge mistake that a lot of these LED companies are leaving out 420nm LEDs. For years and years we have always added more 420nm whether it be UVL Super Actinic VHOs or even upping the amount of blue bulbs we use in our T5 fixtures.

But LEDs come out and they aren't needed anymore? It throws me for a giant loop every time.

Ecotech made a big deal about the modular aspect of the Radion and I would expect that they make available variations in the LED types/colors so I guess we shall see.

They have already mentioned different optics and diodes (I'm guessing XM-L or similar) in their giant thread on their sponsor forum.
