Walt's 45 Cubes Build

Walt,

What is your recipe. I am from Lancaster. I am about to raid your house, and pick your brain.

One Norway Mackerel Filleted and skin removed
Two Squid Pen removed and rinsed
Two sea squirts (husk removed)
One pre packaged bag of green mussels (about a pound I think)
a handful of dried seaweed
Blend above ingreedients (would have used the food processor if I remembered I had one)
Add salmon roe (I will not use this again; will try flying fish roe)
Add 1 package of cyclopeeze
Stir, store and freeze.

very nice, breakout the video
All I have is my cell... my U camera might have video too, but I'm not sure. Either way the quality would suck.
These fish are not really video worthy anyway. They don't even use the flowerpot I provided for shelter. They just hang around the bare side of the tank.

Walt, be careful with that much fat (mackerel) and proteins. Even too much shrimp can lead to bloating/constipation and other unnecessary problems, especially with female clowns.

They will spawn when they are ready. Most clowns spawn with one feeding of frozen and one feeding of flakes a day. You up the feedings for breeding pairs once they produce eggs. IMHO frequent large feedings to induce spawning are overrated and might do more harm than good.

I have been feeding this mix for the last couple weeks 2-4 times per day. I started mixing it up a bit over the last couple days alternating with Mysis every couple feedings.
I think the next time I prepare food that I will not mix it but separate it and in doing so really shake up the variety for them. That way I can not have to spend $50 in one sitting and not have to stay up half the night cleaning and preparing everything.

Do you really think the mix is bad? About 1/3 of the volume is seaweed.

I am a bit concerned at how the female ballooned in less than a month... I am for gradual changes. Even laying females are not that round all the time.

What I was referring to was that their bodies as a whole have thickened up in the last few weeks. I don't think their bellies are particularly large but I get what you're looking at. What the pic doesn't tell you is that they had just eaten not five minutes before the shot was taken. The other thing I've noticed that may not be evident in the pictures is that their coloration has become a little more vibrant.

Your fish look thick and healthy to me.
I figure, if you're providing them with enough nutrition to sustain themselves, and they have enough left over to produce large clutches of eggs, like your melanopus, you must be doing something right.

Your recipe looks completely disgusting!:lmao: I bet it looks scrumptious to a clown fish though. Just out of curiosity, why are you switching from salmon eggs to flying fish eggs?

Because they're a lot smaller than the salmon eggs. They only occasionally eat the salmon eggs. It seems to be when they're popped. Otherwise they're too big for their mouths.

Just curious what...the wine....is for...? :S
That's for me!!!

After many years of resistance, I broke down today and bought a chiller. It's been 100F + 5F for the last few days in MD and my home AC just can't keep up. I got the Arctica DBM-250 1/3 HP unit because it was available for pickup within driving distance (That Fish Place in Lancaster PA.) It's dropping the temp as we speak. My tank was well into the upper 80s yesterday. This morning it was 84.6 before it even got hot. So, this was a necessary measure.

One thing I did note was that as I thought I had seen before, the BTAs got their bubbles when exposed to higher temps giving more momentum to the idea that bubbles are related to temp and light intensity.

I'm setting my temp range between 80 and 84. I have seen no ill effects from a minor temp swing like this. So, I decided to give it a slightly wider range than most other reefers might.

Between the chiller and home AC, the tank is back down to 80F today. I also dropped the chiller setpoint to 82F.

I thought of something else with the bulbing of the BTAs... I added some Tech M a couple days ago. So that could be a factor too. It's also probably good to note that the bulbing was only with one morph. The multi colored BTAs all got the bulbs but the reds and the green remained elongated.

Your definitely dedicated Walt to drive 2-3hrs for a chiller at TFP. Used to be 20min away and now there is no HUGE internet chain w/o a drive like yours...:thumbdown

When those A. Thellei or A.Chrysopterus start spawning I would be interested in a couple babies!

Actually it was my mentality that it was like 2 hrs away but it was only really 1:15 away. Not so bad.

Funny you should mention that. For at least several days, the male chrysopterus has been chewing on the rock work like a fat kid on a piece of caramel. We'll see if anything comes of that.

This seems to follow my moving the rocks with the majority of the anemones out of their tank. They have only one anemone now and are spending all their time together now.

I also took advantage of Petco's recent $1 per gallon tank sale and got another 40 breeder. With it I hope to start moving my system to it's next location on the other side of the basement.

The other thing I did yesterday was to have my brother in law install another breaker and an electrical line with a 6 gang outlet. The line the chiller was on was also providing power to four 250W MHs, three circulation pumps, two sedras, a 500W heater, and several lights in the basement. I didn't trace the line but it may also have been supplying power to the six MJ1200s that circulate the tanks. I know... very irresponsible. I will be having the lines appropriately supplied to manage the system in it's new location. I'm figuring two six gangs for the skimmer, heaters and circulation pumps then one two or four gang for each MH and two PHs (essentially each display.)

Yeah, this is far from my first trip to TFP, but I always think it takes longer than it does. Maybe 'cause I usually go there on the way back from somewhere else and often stop for food, gas or Starbucks along the way.

If I were in PI I could get all three in one place!

OK they killed my link. It was a picture of a sign saying "Starduck" on a logo that looks infringingly similar to a well known Seattle based coffee house chain. They sell Balut, which for those who don't know is a fertilized duck egg with a well developed embryo. They serve it steamed. Its a popular dish in the Phillippines.

They're worried about people making links (free advertising) but not about trademark infringement of a large corporation. Go figure.
