wanting opinion on SCWD

The wavy seas are hooked up to my return pump. I am using a posiedon T4@1000gph. After head loss through all my plumbing it's probably about 600gph. I don't want massive flow through my sump. It's like Ron said it is more of a randomized flow at the surface. I should have said eductor instead of penductor in my earlier post. An eductor can take one gallon of pumped water and turn it into 5 gallons of circulated water. On that note you would require a pressure rated pump. I myself have never used them but researched them when I was planning my setup.

Ok, I already posted a seperate thread, but I had to tell ya. I just got my tunze 6100 yesterday, and WOW what a difference. I was using a SWCD and really thought it was doing a good job, but compared to the tunze, the swcd was a joke. Now, mind you, if a person can not purchase a tunze, the swcd is a simply and cheap way to get a little flow going and make your softies flow back and forth. But now I honestly do see what the big fuss has been about. I put my swcd in my little 45 gal tank and I think that will be enough for that. I am so pleased with this tunze, I made a wonderful choice.

SCWDs are fine on smaller systems at least for a while, but they just wont cut it on a larger system IMO. Enjoy your new toy.

I'm so pleased with this tunze that I don't like the SWCD anymore at all, lol. It was fine when I didn't see the differnce, but now it right there in my face, lol. I am considering getting a smaller tunze for the 45.

When you get used to something "as it is", then see what it was, or could be like. Thats called a "shifting baseline".
The other day at the shop Barry walked by one of the tanks and asked was there something wrong with the bulbs, they just didn't look bright anymore. He was comparing the old standard PCs (which he based his idea of "bright" on for years), to the new halide fixtures we are installing LOL. I also caught him doing the same thing with the flow in the tanks after I installed the wavebox last year. It's a constant learning process really.

well said Ron. I never knew how large the poyps were on my sps. And, I was telling you about the candy cane last night, well they are doing exactly what you said, they are dividing, one stalk is dividing into two stalks and the other into three. I really believe it is due to the tunze because they were not showing signs of this until I installed it. I think the only thing in the tank that is not happy with the tunze are my mushrooms, but you told me it would take them some time, they look better adjusted each day. Honestly, now that I have the tunze, I think flow is as important as the lighting for these corals, at least the sps.

For SPS flow is ranked right up there with Lighting in my opinion. Of course LPS and softies do not require high flow, although some can adjust just fine to it. I usually just set my LPS on the far side of the tank or under the Stream where the flow is at is lowest force.

swcd is coming out with 1in. in put and 1in. out put . you will be able to take it apart if you wish and clean it out . i was told i should be here with in a month .

im running a swcd now , and works ok . not great but deffinetly ok , plus for the money you cant beat it .

You get what you pay for IMO, scwds are ok for smaller systems but no way they can handle flow in a large populated reef as I see it. Nancy understands now, but until you see the difference for yourself you never really appreciate it.

Got a link? The 1" SCWD has been coming out "next month" for several years now.

no i dont have a link , i emailed them and thats what what they told me . i guess i shouldnt hold my breath . and i do agree with , larger tanks need more then a scwd . my tank isnt big only 75 gal. but i really cant afford anything else . and its working for me . if i had the money , the scwd would end up on the shelf .

Yeh, I deal with people daily who put countless dollars worth of coral and fish into there systems with no thought whatsoever to cost. But when I tell them they need more flow or light, they don't want to hear that and can't justify the cost for equipment. The truth is this, they can justify expense as long as it's for a coral or fish but they don't see the real need for strong flow or better light. In a tank with SPS more flow and lighting is not a want, it is a real need and something that can not be skimped on IMO.

BTW the new Tunze Nanos provide more than enough flow for a 75 IMO and the price is realistic.

6045- 1,189 Gph that's a good amount of flow for a 75 and out of only one pump.
