War paint scolymia questions

My lfs has one for $150 and its like purple and orange. My questions are is $150 a good deal or not and would it last in a biocube 14 with sock lighting? Need to know ASAP because I'm going to possible pick it up tomorrow.

Scolys are usually this price and up. Some with extreme colors tend to cost $600~. There is no current way to propagate them so that also increases the cost.

Well I read in your other post you were using power compact lighting. I wouldnt get the scoly, it would be better to upgrade your lighting to at least a 4bulb T5 fixture.

depends on the leds....

do your due diligence and research before you buy. whether its lights or corals.

first, I would suggest buying a couple books. Corals by Borneman is a fantastic book, so is anything by Sprung, Calfo, and Fenner,,, and of course there are a few others well revered.

Read them twice before buying anything.

The whole plan with the scolymia was to buy so nobody else gets in then eventually get the money and upgrade the lights on my biocube to LEDs. My question is will it be ok until I upgrade the lights in 2 months? The LEDs will be fine I have done a little research and got advice from other reefers near me.

Fine is a relative term. What happens when the next coral comes in that you must have and put off the lights for 2 more months?

Are they hardy? Yes. Will it probably live given great conditions aside from the lights, which feed the food it depends on? yes.

Is there a multitude of other scolys out there that can be uncompromised until you get the appropriate lights? yes.

It's really up to you. If you are not getting the answers you want, why ask? You know if you step foot in that fish store, you are going to buy it, right?

Ask yourself what you were going to spend that 150 plus tax on before seeing this awesome scoly? What is more important? Lights that will last 15 years, or a coral that may or may not live for 2 months without those lights?

Thats awesome......Take some time to dial em in and get to know where you want the settings so you dont fry everything in your tank anyway, lol..

good deal man, Good luck in all your endeavors.

Just throwing this out there... Who says PC bulbs won't work for LPS corals, especially a scoly, which IME is a pretty low-light requiring coral already?

I agree with the posts that suggest researching first, and I do agree that you should buy the best equipment you can afford before buying corals, but you'll be fine with PC lighting as long as the wattage is sufficient.

Also, what kind of LEDs are you able to buy at an LFS for $70?

lol right? Just saying, I wouldn't put a coral under a 70 dollar light. I don't know if thats snobby, but with the amount of research I did for LEDs before making the switch a couple years ago I would trust a godd power compact light before a 70 dollar 'lfs' led.

I don't see anywhere , that he said he was getting the LEDs from a LFS. Regardless any LEDs for $70 are probably not going to be very good , unless you were getting a really good deal on some used ones.

He said $70 plus tax. Normally you don't pay tax on used goods, correct? Even most online purchases don't require taxes. My point still stands - $70 won't buy much.

Anyway. That was my least important point. You can absolutely keep a scoly under PC bulbs.

I agree fully with Eric. Scolys can be kept under relatively low lighting, especially if they are fed often....

Also, $70 will not buy LEDs that will support corals needing moderate to high lighting. It will on the other hand buy LEDs that will supplement color...

He could do it for less around $70 if he soldered bridglelux LEDs 12 3w bridgelux LEDs would do it and it would only take one driver but everyone posting here is correct to get a quality fixture $70 even used isnt going to buy much
