Warning! Ebay LED Lght-FIRE!!

update, as these leds are still being sold.
If this incident truley happened, what has been the recourse or outcome.....

There is no outcome, or recourse. Buyer beware is the name of the game.

I laughed ou loud when someone mentioned warranty.
Would you want a replacement after the first one caused a fire in a school?

With reference to items that are imported into the USA. The US Customs Service, that is now part of, Homeland Security, has the responsibility to ensure all items imported into the US meet certain safety standards, among other things, prior to being allowed into the commerce of the US. These standards and testing can be quite extensive and demanding on the importer of record. Guess big brother is not looking after us the way we pay him to...

First off, sorry for you loss and even sorrier for those affected by the loss of the facilities. You are not the first and will not be the last to fall victim to Chinese quality control. Once this thread goes dormant, more will line up to buy them. There are plenty of reefers buying these fixtures claiming they are just as good as the US made fixtures. At least until something bad happens. IMO, we spend so much money on livestock to be cheap on equipment.

Most of the USA made fixture are from China... Some that do come from China are taken apart and reassembled here in the USA and then stated they are made in the USA...

You are correct and if you continue reading in the thread, I went into more detail and clarified my point.

Well said Greg!
It's all in the quality control.

Regulatory Compliance (Meets Requirements/Limits): UL, CE...., This was on the Aqua Illuminations web site under specs for their LEDs. Dont know exactly what it all means but appears these lights do meet some U.S. and European safety standards.

UL listings and regulatory policy have little to do with these sort of unfortuant events. failures happen even to the best products out there, it is an inevitalbe reality. Even UL listed USA sold fixtures can cause this.

My co-worker nearly had his house burnt down with he and his wife in it due to a faulty marine land flourescent hood (you know the type, comes with most tanks you buy for fresh water) UL listed hood and tank bought from Walmart if I recall corectly. Fortunately they were still awake and and saw the fire starting and put it out with a fire extinguisher and blanket. (had they been asleep who knows......)

I am very sorry to hear about this tradgety but these things do happen. personaly I would not buy one of those lights for a whole lot of reasons, however fear of it burning my house down would not be one of them.

We deal with this all the time as distributors dealing with the Chinese market and had to do our own full blown recalls in the past. So we have experience.

certification for North American standard. TUV Usa-C, ETV - UL usa-c - CSA usa

The crazy thing about all this is that everything can cause a fire. Faulty wiring That's been in a house for 30 years can burst into flames. An automobile that just drove 50 miles and parked can burn. Its called an accident. Stuff happens Houses burn everyday. Lights fail. Pumps burn up. Outlets short out and sometimes the worst happens.

Everything we buy is china made. Get over it. Sorry bout your classroom though that is bad for the kids.

The loss is terrible but we pay insurance premiums for a reason. I feel the blanket statements on china lights/ pumps or whatever are not always correct or fair. The people who say you get what you pay for just **** me off. I always try to buy American when I can find and/ or afford it. Shoes, clothes, vehicles. But I've owned several Chinese aquarium products including the odysea light that where burning everyone's homes down supposedly. Well the cheap lights never had ant issues , but I've had two made in usa fixtures catch on fire a Hamilton vho ballast from a 5 ft 4 bulb fixture that was about $600. And an icecap 250 mh ballast. I understand there may be a more inheritant risk with the cheaper products but we are dealing with electricity and water. And things like corrosion, salt creep overloaded, circuits, no gfi are all things that can turn a $1000 fixture or a $100 fixture into a accident waiting to happen. I recently purchased 9'd120'leds for about $1200. The designer LEDs would have Been 4-5 grand. I'm sorry even though i could swing them I refuse to. I have an Eco-tec mp10 guit working at the year mark and I was second owner. Was told to send it in and would, prob. Have to pay,to fix/ replace. I have at least a dozen tunze power heads. Half work and half don't. We see fires in our hobby often, not with the devastation the op suffered usually. Our equipment takes alot of abuse in harsh environment that wether its made in the us or elsewhere it fails. But I also just bought 4 jabeo power heads so,according to some ppl,I'm an idiot. Bottom line it's your $$. Do your research, and implement proper hook up and maintence.

And using that rational means that Kia and Hyundai make the best cars since the offer the best warranty. It's called faith. Without faith there will be fewer sales. Warrantees instil faith in products that have poor reputations. Companies with excellent reputations for long lasting products don't have to offer long warranties for customers to have faith in their products.

I have 170 000 miles on my Sonata and haven't had to fix hardly anything lol

Before I plug anything in I look for the UL stamp. if it is approved by Underwriters labs, It is safe enough for me to try. Sorry about your loss.

Apparently these bulbs are ce approved. I've been in the foodservice equipment industry for a long time and when it comes to quality components most are listed ul for etl. Back in the days USA companies made there components in the USA now more and more I see parts made in china and you can tell the difference. The older items are stronger and lasted longer just can't find them anymore.

You have to be careful with the UL or UL Listed. Sometimes manufactures will place the UL stamp on there box and only the power supply maybe listed not the light, pump, or motor.

Pretty sure i have these exact same lights....Ive had them for almost a year now, with out issue. Hopefully there wont be!

It all comes down to quality control. UL approves the design but they don't inspect every unit that comes out of the factory, they just approve the prototype. If the factory is pumping out millions of each unit there is bound to be some that are bad and thats where qc matters. LED are taking 120vAC and converting them to low voltage DC that in its self causes heat from resistors and so forth. They use cheap parts to make these things which for the most part work out good but it still not worth taken a risk like that anymore. The issue is were can you find Made in USA, germany, Japan, etc. item anymore. At least if they can make the parts here and assemble them in a different country. This thread made me realize that from now on I am sticking with higher end equipment. I have been through a fire and there is no amount of insurance coverage you can give me to go though that again. Most Insurance companies act like they care with there misleading commercials, trust me when it comes to collecting they will stretch it out as long as possible.
