WATCH OUT Something to know about Mag 12

Really? You can be so certain about something like that? You happen to know everything that could be in that screw?

We all know what rust is and most of the time won't cause issues but we are NEVER that certain. I remember someone on here finding a razor blade hidden in their sand and all their issues went away when they removed it.

But they purposely sink old ships because reefs thrive around them.

So we never know. We are never that certain in this hobby.

The rust isnt just off the screws its off the body of the pump. There was nothing in my sand the first time or the second time I changed it. The only metal things in the tank were the mag 12 and a mag 9.5.

With the sinking of ships your talking 1 ship 100 feet long to an ocean of millons of gallons. And god doing the water changes and alk and cal tests.

So one said it right to me once we are trying to keep the ocean that god made in a glass tank... And we arent god.....

If you use a water conditioner or ro unit your water would be iron deficient anyways so a little rust which i believe is the iron oxidizing and leaching back into the water would probably never even cause your water to go above "normal" FE content. This had nothing to do with your lps problems imo

It was an SPS problem... LPS loved my tank and water....

Well I figured why not Im not going to sell the mag 12 anyway so I opened it up.

Take a look at the pictures and tell me if its the screws causeing the rust...


I think they are only part of the problem.

I have never had a Mag get that bad. On second thought, maybe I haven't ever left one without maintenance that long so who knows?

What I see is not so much rust from stainless steel screws but possibly a collection of GFO that was attracted to the magnetic pump and ground up. There is far more rust in that pump than corrosion on the screws. Keep in mind that SS screws has a lot of metals other than iron, and the other metals are worrisome, but in this case I do not believe the screws pictured are the cause, they are not severely corroded.

I agree with sirreal. Did you run GFO? If looks like it was ran to fast and ground up. If that is the case then it would also explain why SPS died and the other stuff lived.

Sorry to hear about you issues, I have had the same thing happen with all of the MagDrives ive ever used but I stopped using them because of noise issues rather than the rust.
Unfortunately, Id have to agree with the folks who dont think the rust had anything to do with your problems. Almost every time i move my tank (which has been about once evey one or two years) I seem to find a rusty razor blade in my tank and have never noticed any ill effects.

That is what I have been trying to say that the screws are only part of the problem. They had rust on them too but not enough to be like that all over the pump. Im thinking its the metal on the pump and inside that started to rust from inside out.

I did run gfo but I dont think its from that. But again its just my thinking. The funny part is that where the hose goes on it is plastic and the rust stained it and even attached itself to the plastic....

I never looked in to gfo's but if you take a piece of it you can crush it with your fingers turning it into dust. Now I know if you take a piece of rust and try to crush it with your fingers it will not turn to dust.
