Water Condition - Help

Not to be a Debbie Downer but the Hanna Calcium Checker got terrible reviews on Bulk Reef Supply. Most people say the readings aren't even close. It's too bad too... I love my Hanna Alk tester. Its super convenient. I would check it against a different test kit.

I like the idea of a machine reading color. I suck at it!!

Since the sample size is so small, 0.1 ml, I think it is very error prone.
That combined with the stated accuracy of +- 6% of reading means you could easily be off by 10%

Testing several times in a row will give you an idea how consistent you are.

Anybody have a test they like better?

I like Salifert also as I've used them for years. I'm used to them but I've heard great things about the new red sea kits.. Plus you can buy refills so it turns out a little cheaper..

I would suggest you stop dosing all supplements for a week or so and then test again to calculate your actual consumption. The large frequent water changes have probably contributed to the precip issue as most salt mixes run quite high Alk and Ca levels as well as mag. Elevated mag levels can even allow you to force a larger amount of alk and ca into suspension before precipitation will actually take place. Hope this helps.

thanks all for your valuable inputs. I used Hanna and Salifert and they were pretty close. Yeah, I have stopped all dosing and see how it will work.

This brings up an IDEA! :)

How about we do a 'Test the test kits' experiment at our meets? Keeping it simple, how about doing one major test (CA, Alk, Nitrate, Phosphorus, others?) per meet?

Something like several people bring their test, different brands, we test the host's water with each kit, compare results both for ease of use and accuracy. Accuracy will be tough because we won't know what the answer really is, but maybe some conclusions could be reached if several tests agree.

If we wanted accuracy results we could make known solutions. John and I both have planted tanks so we have the ingredients to make a known nitrate and phosphate solution. We could do the same thing with some Calcium chloride and magnesium sulfate.

Now dont start bringing your planted tank insanity in here. ;)

And it will be delivered in a Prius!

Not saying we should do this at Grant's house. For a future meet or two.

I'd have to dust off long time unused chemistry brain cells to make standard solutions. :(

Maybe Nick and I could work on this. It might be fun to find out what tests give great results and are easy to use.

Gotta get me one of them Prius' John. Do they make one that you and I could fit in without it looking like a Clown car when we fall out. ;) Who loves ya Baby. :)

That's funny! We should do the next Butter & Eggs parade!
