water drainage question

not sure how to ask but
how much higher does the drain have to be then it's out to provide good water movement?
I have a sump and seperate fuge. Trying to figure out how much higher the drain from the fuge should be back into the sump
thx!

My set up is a 45g refugium, next to a 45g DSB and then a 90g sump. The refugium to DSB weir is about 1" taller than the DSB to sump weir. I need even slower water movement thru the DSB area so I plumbed in a 1" pipe from the refug/DSB weir thru the water of the DSB to the DSB/sump weir. And I installed a gate valve in the middle of that pipe so I could control the flow being 'diverted' from the normal flow. You could just install a valve to help control the flow from the refugium to the sump.

I hope that helps. But I'm not 100% sure I understand your question.

It just needs to be higher than the sump, otherwise you can set them up next to each other and use a HOB overflow to link them.
