Water Polisher Question

Many years ago I had a filter that I used to 'polish' the water in my tanks. It used diatomaceous earth, always ran hot, but did a remarkable job removing fines from tank water. It wasn't a filter you left on an aquarium, but would use occasionally for a couple of hours when needed. What do you use today to 'polish' your water?

Diatom filters polished down to 1 micron. You can still find them used from time to time for about $50 since nobody newer really wants them. Some of the Marineland canisters have 1 micron pleated cartridges for water polishing. The HOT magnum comes to mind but I believe they also have newer offerings for quick polishing.

I used a System I diatom filter for years, until it finally wouldn't run any more. I have a Vortex XL that I replaced it with and although it works, it is a PIA to set up and use.
