Water Quality?

Does the water quality have to be REALLY good for mantis' to survive? I just can't figure out why mine keep dying. I'm using water from my Bath, the same water I use for my reef. The mantis' are the only thng that is getting affected by it. I really want to keep one in my 6g.

BTW, this is Dan87.

Roy my first mantis that you said was a Pseudosquilla Ciliata. I found in the book "National Audubon Society Field Gude to North American Seashore Creatures" Has the picture of it! Looks exactly like it. They say it is the Gonodactylus Oerstedii. Anyway I'm lookign nto find another wild mantis when i go back to "Hawk's Cay" on Duck Key. Anyone know if this is illegal to take animals form the ocean without permit?
Anyways... does anybody else do well without RO water?

Water from your bath? Do you wash yourself first? :)
Anyway, the water I use is water from my local beach, and top it up with tap water I've had sitting for a few days. I've had no problem with the water so far.

I can't think of a single guidebood that has not made a mistake with some of the stomatopods figured. Aside from the fact that both species are roughly the same size and can be the same general color, P. ciliata and N. oerstedii would be pretty hard to confuse. P.c. is a spearer with checherboard light eyes. N. o. is a smasher with purple meral spots.

Roy I agree. It just looks excatly like it, but it's a smasher. Anyway have you ever had problems with water quality Roy?

Yes, I've experienced lots of water quality problems. As usual, different species have different requirements, so I can't generalize and I have recently discussed organic solvents and other toxic compounds getting into tanks. For most intertidal species that I have kept, they are fairly tolerant of salinity, oxygen and pH problems, but can have difficulty with nitrogen including nitrates. Subtidal species seem more susceptable to allo these problems. For example, one small piece of uneat shrimp left in a 5 gal aquariums can kill an O. havanensis withing 24 hours. A Neogonodactylus bredini or wennerae would laugh at this.

In general, I've found that with the very small aquaria that I use (1-5 gal), partial water changes are the way to go.

How often would you require water changes in a 2g tank? I usually do 25-50% 2x a week with water from my reef tank.

I usually change a quarter of the water every 2-4 weeks. My main concern is nitrates. I use Fluval canister filters that provide more than enough surface for bacterial treatment of ammonia and nitrites, but the nitrates worry me. That is my only concern about using water from your reef system. Sometimes they can be a bit high in nitrate. If it is low, then all should be fine.

Roy

p.s. Hope Claudette passed you by safely.

My nitrate levels are pretty low in my reef tank. Thats why I don't see any harm in doing water changes this way. It also saves me some time from having to whip a new batch of water.

On a personal note, I made it through the storm intact. The wind and rain were pretty amazing, especially the surf coming over the 14 ft seawall to cover passing cars. Its my first hurricane on the island, but i've gone through a couple of tropical storms here. Live right off the beach, but in pretty sturdy building. Luckily my power didn't go out.:)

A couple of links from a different thread on this site, about collecting in Florida.

Not sure where you are but it can't hurt to put in a couple of links.

http://floridaconservation.org/license/#SWF
http://marinefisheries.org/recreational/recharvestmls.htm

The first site is about getting salt water fishing license, and second is talking about restricted species for collection.
They didn't list stomatopods on either list though, so you might want to check with local department of fish and game or whatever.

Cheers,
Doug

This is ReefMagic :), I made that name b/c I was in Chicago and I forgot this pw.

Alright I'll look into those sites. I usually go to Duck Key, it's the Hawks Cay Resort. We always go there it's awesome.

I just found out I am getting about a 5inch Peacock. My dad found one and is going to send it to me next week. What kind of requirements are needed in water.
Thanks
